Cordon Bleu ( Dam ) Gets It Finally After Long Last

By Cruise_b'lore | 17-Oct-2019

Hello folks,

Before I venture on Consigliori Let me update those unaware of its impeccable bloodline.

The grand-dam of Consigliori is the mighty Cordon Bleu. He is the only horse to have won all the 4 winter classics along with the ultimate race of the country - The Indian derby.

One of her foals was the extremely talented Continual. He won Mysore, Indian 2000gn, Mysore 2000gn in a common canter without being extended in any. He was on course to becoming a legend but destiny willed otherwise. He broke his shin bone when being worked on the all weather track. The vets did try their best but like stated before, destiny did not will it and was never seen on the track again.

From my personal experience as well as the words of his schooler, the legendary trainer Rashid Byramji, he was simply unstoppable. He was poetry on motion which best describes his galloping prowess. You had witness him live to understand truly what a magnificent specimen he was.. I am yet to see such a fluent galloper in my racing career for so devastating he was on track.

Believe it not, I felt a void within me when I got to know that his racing career was cut short due to an injury.

More in next.

@ Ksmrow

No trouble. Pleasure to be of assistance.

TRIBAL WARLORD (1992 b g World Tour out of Soprano)  was not from the Uma family of Cordon Bleu, Continual, etc. I can see your thinking. TRIBAL WARLORD was from the Star of Vintage family of Byerley Stud. Uma family was also nurtured at Byerley Stud.  But they are two different families. Other common factor is that TRIBAL WARLORD was full brother CAPE STORM. CAPE STORM and CAPE STAR (Uma family) were both fillies and both won Classics for Dr. Vijay Mallya.

I notice that TRIBAL WARLORD won the only race of his career for you at Hyderabad. He was trained by P. Reddy and ridden by Donald Netto. He won at odds of 20/1 and paid Rs. 89 on Tote for a fiver. Trust you made a killing that day !

Oops, sorry, folks.Once again I stand corrected. I addressed the 'wrong" Sharma.

Hello Sharma Sarat,

If I am not mistaken you are the same gentleman who runs a racing blog named as trackeagle. If so, let me tell you that I greatly admire your read of the races and do make it a point to go through them before leaving for the course.

Hello folks,

Back again after acknowledging the few corrections.

Let me now get on to the next part of the tragic ( forced to use this word for lack of a better one ) tale of Cordon Bleu the dam.

She then did get one equally as talented as Continual but, I think, would be better to say very, very near to the caliber of Continual.

He is Admiralty, presently standing as a stallion at Chester stud ( Maharahtra ).

Admiralty made a sensational start to his career. His debut run is still etched firm and clear in my memory.

He seemed dis-interested in the race till the bend but, oh boy, you had to be there to see the electrifying run that he gave once he was reminded of his task by his rider. He simply scythed through the field like a hot knife through butter. His acceleration was simply superb. He won easing up winning by more than 7 lengths in an excellent time of 1:23:62 and could have easily broken the course record had he not been eased long before the post.

He then won his next start in a common canter. Quoting the odds ( 20/100 ) to give an idea of his superiority in the field.

Admiralty was then taken to Bangalore and won his first start there with a measure of ease. To those unaware, do you know who finished 3rd to him in that race?
It was the biggest money-spinner of Indian history and very much in the reckoning even at the age of seven - the champion Desert God ( credit must be given to his connections for having named him most right for he left the field deserted in most of his starts ).

But then what happens next!
Tragedy strikes much like what happened with Continual. He suffered a tendon injury and that was it. He was never the same horse again. His connections did try best and got him to participate in The Indian 2000gn but the old injury resurfaced and that cut short his career on track.

The reason for recanting on these 2 horses was that I had hoped that they would be able to replicate the success of Cordon Bleu but alas, it was not to be.

But, but, but.. here comes Consigliori and that awakens the spirits once again.

More in next.

I had actually meant to state all the 4 Bangalore winter classics but inadvertently missed out mentioning Bangalore. Nonetheless, no doubt, the feats of the runners mentioned are on par if not better than that of Cordon Bleu.

Attn: S.C. Sharma

Yes, you are right. Cordon Bleu was indeed the great grand-dam ( 3rd dam ) of Consigliori.

Pssst...Mr Sharma, you had forgotten to mention of this great runner when you recanted about trainer Rahid Byramji's exploits in your article nee posting a couple of months back but I am glad you know the bloodline and family tree of this legendary hprse named Cordon Bleu.

DEEP WATER BLUES (gr f 1977) won 6 races incl. Calcutta Oaks, Kashmir Gold Cup and placed 2nd in Stayers' Cup, Bangalore St. Leger, South India St. Leger, South India Oaks, Golconda 1000 Guineas, etc.

The maternal grand dam of CONSIGLIORI is CAPE STAR who had won the Bangalore Oaks.Of her 5 live foals CAPRESE the dam of CONSIGLIORI was the best performed, winning 7 races but could not get any big win,ran 2nd in Bangalore 1000 Guineas.

CORDON ROUGE was definitely a top filly with R R Byramji, she was from the famous UMA family and her dam DEEP WATER BLUES was perhaps a non raced one but gave many good offsprings in the late seventies.

@ Cruise_B'lore

I trust you will not mind my correcting some inadvertent inaccuracies in para 2 of your posting:-

     1. Cordon Bleu is the third dam -- not the grandam -- of Consigliori.

     2.  As regards "the only horse" mention, permit me to mention Fair Haven who won Calcutta 1000 Guineas, Calcutta 2000 Guineas, Calcutta Oaks, Calcutta Derby, Indian Oaks, Indian Derby and Indian St. Leger in consecutive starts. Fair Haven is the only one to have won seven winter Classics in-a-row.

I would also like to mention that to me the feats of Royal Challenge and Star Haven winning all five winter Classics at their centre and Jacqueline winning four consecutive Indian Classics including the Indian Derby are on par if not better than Cordon Bleu's achievement.
