Horse Racing — Game Of Intelligence And Skill - Our Approach

By S C Sharma | 21-Mar-2020

The history of horse racing in India is more than 240 years old when first race course set up in Madras ( presently known as Chennai ) in 1777 and racing started in India from 1780 from Madras. After that other race courses came in existence and at present total nine racing centres are conducting this flat racing under the supervision of six race clubs / turf authorities. The six independent race clubs and turf authorities are— Chennai, Mumbai, Bangaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Mysore.

Horse racing in India used to be conducted under the police act of 1888 and gambling act of 1938 till the year 1996. In 1974 Tamilnadu Government imposed a ban on conduct of horse racing in the state of TN and the same was challenged in Hon’ble high court of TN and the ban was stayed till final disposal of the case and racing activity continued as usual. Late M A M Ramaswamy took keen interest and took  this  battle for its  final and decisive conclusion upto Supreme Court  and it took 22 years till the Hon’ble Supreme Court of the country finally disposed of this petition in 1996 and gave a historic judgement removing racing from the purview of above mentioned acts and declared ‘ Horse Racing ‘ as not gambling but ‘ A Game  of Intelligence  and Skill  based Spirt ‘ where prize money is distributed and it is not a game of luck. Today betting on horse racing is legal with the licence holder bookmakers operating their stalls at various race clubs and so also computerised betting counters opened for small punters at various race clubs and tote centres ( operated and controlled by various race clubs ). But all types of bettings are subject to enforcement of various tax laws such as betting tax or GST or income tax laws and tax deducted at source by IT dept over and above a permissible limit of income.

In all these years business and turnover in racing industry increased manifold and so also the purchase cost of thoroughbred and maintenance. Trainer, owners invented new methods to hide the real potential of the horses and making it difficult for the punters to know their real intentions and game plan and consequently punters are loosing more and more  rather than winning even at some intervals.

As I mentioned in first para and declared by Hon’ble Supreme Court racing is a game of intelligence and skill, so it is essential for everyone who indulges himself in betting observe some cautious and responsible approach with intelligence and skill . We will discuss a important grey area ‘Paddock look ‘ where very few punters are paying attention. Apart from Class, Weight, Rating, Bloodline and Timing etc., etc., ‘Paddock look ‘ is a very important area which reveals the real intentions of owner and trainer and the horse’s likely  performance which will help you in deciding your bettings in a particular race on a particular horse.

Many times trainer enters a horse not for winning but to reduce weight, drop in points or drop in class, so that after arriving at certain level they will go for their  targeted goal. Horses are entered over wrong distances, horses are not properly exercised or not given required feed only to under perform or to confuse the punters. But all these intentions of the trainer can be exposed or caught red handed  if you make a habit of observing horses in paddock and after that you decide your betting. Paddock look observation will reveal many plus- minus points and shortcomings if any. The difference in body weight of the horse in previous and present run,  helps you to determine the fitness of the horse and the condition of the horse whether thin or gross or about his over or under-weight. We are discussing the complexities of the game and the areas where we can pay more attention to get some sort of benefit.

As  racing is a game of intelligence and skill if you observe paddock looks keenly you can notice the skin/coat shinning or dullness. If a horse is keen and racing fit the skin/ coat shining will reveal and expose this truth. Similarly if a horse is wetting or sweating at the time of paddock parade it reveals the nurveousness of the horse before running. Similarly tossing up of head ups and down frequently, pinning back ears, stamping of feet, rearing up or not allowing the rider to sit are some bad signs which effect the smooth running of the horse and you can observe caution and avoid bettings in such situations.

Corona Virus precautions and social distancing given me  some extra time to discuss some important issues with you. No loss should  occur due to negligence of anyone or over confidence and one should take better care of his investments. . Chasing of losses cannot yield always recovery and in other terms lead to more losses. Whatever is lost that should be accepted with grace and without blame game because other than you no one is responsible for that  and lessons should be learned from past mistakes and future planning should be done with more cautiousness and with more responsibility.  My sincere and good advice is avoid  rash , wild and desperate bettings. Avoid chasing and unplanned bettings . Make your own betting plan / system and strictly adhere to that and everything should be in your own planned way and budget without effecting your daily livelihood and family responsibilities. Take good care of yourself and stay healthy.

I wish you good time and tons of good luck with duwaas. God bless you all.

Friends, I would like to carry forward the points, my very experienced, intelligent and well meaning friend, Mr S C Sharma has brought out for the benifit of all of us, the Horse Racing lovers and followers. We have covered the study of Paddock looks which is a very essential part and requirment of Horse Racing. This my friends will take lots of your effort, learning it, practicing it and implementing it and then if you succeed in all these aspects, you can hope to get some worth while results and self confidence.

Today I am also going to bring out the point about the built up form of Horses. This my friends is actually the extra ordinary preparation of a Horse for some very important and big prize race, e.g Indian Derby or Invitation cup and the example of the Horse I can give is Adjudicate. This is a very glaring example of special preperation. Now this will involve, good/ adequate rest, good and special training schedule. very good and suitable diet e.g special imprted feed, very good and expensive tonics and injections and all necessary training to get the desired peak condition.(when the Horse achieves this condion, the good trainer knows that his Horse has reached the peak and he is quite confident of his wards success) Now this is what as a good and intelligent Race lover we should also try to know or try to find out from all our studies and sources. Not at all easy, but if you can succeed 30/40 percent times it will be worth while and is the aim of paddock study also.

The same theorey is also applicable for other races also, but on a moderate scale and paddock study is important here also to judge the state of preparation. Here is also a word of caution, please dont mix up class and preparation, this aspect we have to study separately, because there is lot of difference in the study of class of a horse and the  preparation of the horse. Friends, in the end, you have to study quite a lot and there is no short cut, this is what I will always say. Good luck.

@ 100% : With due respect I wish to submit I do not agree with your statement that bookmakers are always winning. I have seen  bookmakers incurring losses and retiring hurt. They have a bookmaking  formula and calculation and if they work in that framework, they are in profit.  In that framework they eat favourites, second favourites and fluke horses in some prescribed ratio. . Normally when a favourite wins bookmakers loss is not more than 30 percent, on second favourite they are levels or 5 to 10 percent in loss and after that they are in plus. Their main income is tax which they are hiding and not paying. Not showing actual turnover in their betting sheets and everyone knows how much tax they are stealing.

Secondly they are eating more than one horse in the field which reduces their payment risk and collection of  tax of more than one horse is additional benefit to them. Thirdly some bookmakers having good contacts or dummy owners and according to their input they eat less or more amount and remaining in profit. They are known as fancy bookmakers. Fourth point is now a day’s some  of the bookmakers eating horses in tax in bookmakers ring and unloading outside in net odds with private bookmakers,  which also ensures their profitability. Fifth they eat as per their risk taking and payment capacity only, whereas punters game and betting is very rash and wild and unplanned and punters play unequal amount. Like  small amount  on non favourites and big amounts  on favourites.

These are some points observed by me  and  this is my assessment which makes the dintinction between bookmaker and a punter. More so now a days if you don’t like a favourite,  you too have the option of eating. By offering little extra you can also eat from the bookmakers in the ring. . After all you have to make your planning,  how to stop loosing ?. and how to start winning/earning or how to remain in profit ? . I have seen some punters they select one horse either for playing or eating and content with that and they are not in loss like others and enjoying their racing.

Thanks to Sharmaji

For your valuable detailed tops to punters, here is one problem from 1980-2000 period the racing is different than the present racing, previously every owner tried their horse on prestigious issue to grab the race. But trend has changed lot in all racing centres the big owners become a syndicate and ruling entire racing in India even the horse is picture of fitness in paddock everybody playing that horse the horse becomes odds on then big owners are eating their own horse either wd going doosra or giving opportunity to some other fellow owners win the race.

A clear example is in invitation weekend the sprinters cup example the 2 unbeaten horses of last 4 runs in 12mts race MULTIFACETED & IRON AGE but owners United and are their horses, whereas MULTIFACETED won 14mts race in emphatic style, how it's happend everyone should think, races are totally manipulated now a days.

My sincere advise to everyone don't play big owners horses in main events at particularly when horse become below even money.

SC Sharma sir,

Would u tell us why bookie's always win without detailing paddocks looks, reading books, just with making odds..even many of them r 12 th pass,..where they stand in front of those punters who study pentrometer to weather & videos to incident, accidents.. Lot more..why they loss.. Bookie's  r even plays every race..& center ..why they r in profit? Don't tell they take betting on 12 horce,& only 3 has to paid..bcz they also offer place on each horce...is all this possible just on odds?..then why we  not talk on how to observe betting tread & making profits

@ Steven : Your query / question already clarified  and answered in 5th and 6th para of my post. Pl go through.  @ PDS : Well said and definitely experience also plays vital role. You always view things in right perspective and your view point is very much  valid and put things on right track and I respect very much.  It compells me to improve further and reminds me my resposibilies.  Thanks.    Punters too can learn many things from their past experiences and mistakes  and take necessary  precautions and enrich their racing knowledge and use their skill and intelligence in much better way, but many times I found their approach as very casual and as if they don't want to learn or improve further or not keen to learn and accept the fact.

Friends, Mr Sharma in his write up has brought out lots of very valid and important points by way of paddock study which, if understood and learnt thoroughly and then used can prove very useful and I can assure you, you can achieve very good success in Horse Racing. However, it is not very easy, it involves so many factors that it will take you many years to really master the art of paddock reading. Yes, in case you have some good trainer as your friend he can guide you to learn this technique, but it will take lot of learning effort from your side. good luck

Well said Sharmaji. As you have posted previously those are the basics for understanding merit of the horse and winability. Also as you said final paddock look, difference of weight, I  from would like to add apart from difference of weight,  overweight- say above 500 kgs and underweight below 400 kgs - with a few exeption, coating, mood n behavior of the horse will give us some good idea. As ayyarnet said we have to overcome varius 'tricks of the trade' adopted by the connections, this can be found only at the last minute. Hence patience is required. Some critics are always there, let us forget and avoid unnecessary criticism and hope for good times. Thanks.

@  WIN I : If we are getting payments over and above 10k on tote purchase tickets the race club is already deducting TDS and releasing the due payment by way of a/c payee cheques and the deducted tax money depositing in govt treasury and also issuing us a certificate to this effect.  If your earning in bookmakers ring is more than prescribed limit of 10k than bookmakers also suppose to follow the same rules and you know how bookmakers record bettings in their sheets and pay how much  taxes. But if you calculate and arrive at a conclusion that by winning daily or weekly or monthly all your small winning amounts exceeds the exemptions  and  your income is over and above permissible exemptions than at the end of year alongwith your yearly IT return you can disclose the same to IT under head 'income from horse race winnings ' and pay the taxes to IT dept as per rules or as advised by your auditor or tax consultant.  IT dept accepts your disclosure of income from races and they are particular about collecting taxes.  If you have income,  than pay taxes but if you wish to show losses really if any incurred by you  than in that case  in racing they won't accept more than 1k loss per year and they won't give any concession or return or refund to you  on  your already deducted or paid taxes.  They believe in income and accept your disclosure but won't accept losses particularly in races and lotteries more than 1k per year.

Friends:

Yes once upon a time Horse Races in India used to be a game of skill and intelligence. Not now !  Today lot of vested interests have taken over the game for money. Clubs also not in a posirtion to control them  because a few members are also involved in the conspiracy. An enemy iside the house is worse than the one outside !!!   Passion for Horses and Races have gone with Late Dr.MAM.  Today tricks of the trade plays a major part.  Punters must  understand the situation and play their cards safely.

I suggest that our friends to take it as a test drive or project  invest a small amount  with certain PLACE one or two races and roll it up in the next race days. After a few Race days you will find your money grow amazingly. Of course you must have little patience and should not spend that mney and keep it for a few Race days.  With a small invest ment of Rs 500/- I went upto Rs 50K.

Good Luck to all

Bad news to all race lovers, hope there won't be any races in BTC hence Forth. The government will aquire the land because BTC has to owe and further more.

If at all if BTC has  to conduct races  it should be away 20km from the city

This land is eye hawk for political leaders.
