A Small Addition To Major's Articles.

By B. Vijay | 23-Mar-2020

Like  innumerable  readers  I  too   look  forward  to and  read  thoroughly each  article  by  Major  Nargolkar ( Rtd ) .  Here  I  am  making  mention  of  1 race ,  a  classic , which  Major  has  not  touched  in  his  articles.  That  is  the Blazing  Ace  North India  Derby  ( Gr 3 ) run  on  18/2/20  at  Delhi.  The  race  was  won  by  Top  Secret  By  Crimson China ( USA )  x  Secret  Wish  by  Burden of  Proof ( Ire ) .  Both  sire  and  dam  are  well-bred  --   I  am  sure  Major  would  like  to  do  the  pedigree  analysis.  I  will  only  say  that  the  sire  stands  at  Col  Garcha's  Gee  Stud.  He  is  an  internationally  renowned  polo  player  and  he also  has  a  share  in  Top  Secret.  This  naturally  brings  in  one  more  sire  and  farm  into  the  Classic  picture.  The  winner  picked  up  more  than  20  lakhs  in  stake money.  Crimson China ( U S A )   did  not  have  the  best  of  starts  but  his  progeny  have  started  winning  this  year.  This  shows  that  breeders  and  buyers  must   have  confidence  and  give  reasonable  time  to  young  sires  to  produce  good  stock.

@ B. Vijay

There is no definition of a "Classic" laid down. In India, we have about 40 "Classics"; England has 5.  It seems to be a matter of convention.

I think Stud Book Authority of India does not consider North India Derby as a "Classic" because Prevalence is not mentioned under Razeen's Classic winners. Poonawalla Stud Farms have bred a few winners of North India Derby but none of them figure in the Scroll of Honour on their website.

 @ Anil Xk

CRIMSON CHINA[USA] was discussed in detail on this site in an article on new stallions in November 2018. Perhaps, you missed it.
