Punters Forum

By Aravind | 26-Mar-2020

Everyday we talk about our selections, racing Incidents, gaining, losing money. But now there is no race anywhere in India and when and where it wud start nobody knows. We are free now. Why don't we use this free time on our personal journey into racing career, ups and downs? It wud be interesting to read individuals achievenent or a lesson for failures. Many punters wud be like to recollect  their starting point.

On my part I would like to share on how I without any interest dragged to Race course 47 yrs back  and now it's my daily life.

We were in Ooty since 1959 and in 73 when I finished my SSLC exams as usual April 14th Ooty season was started. One of my relative used to work with Vels bookie( I m not sure)in Chennai wud come to Ooty every year coz those days there was no local bookies in Ooty. Another person a punter, relative of my neibhour used to come very year. Untill 1973 April we never bothered abt their presence. But in 1973 April 14th this bookie assistant took me to race course to keep cash bag since regular guy fell ill. That's how I entered race course. Totally 4freinds same time entered Ooty course, all Three migrated to Mumbai, well settled there with own house, retairment benefits.they never into racing after 1978. But only I m clinging into course,  I will share many interesting stories from 1973 upto 2020 Invitation one by one after seeing response from other punters. I started this Thread to continue or cut  is in Punters hands.

My dear JP. Linden Flora won the 1978 edition of Indian St Leger, at Poona on 8 10.1978.

It ran in the  (breeders) colors of Poonawallas, and not Goldie Brown.

As per records.  The owner's name is given as  M/s Cyrus S &Z S Poonawalla, Solomon .F. Sopher and M.A.M. Ramaswamy.

@ Indian_ Turf _Record.

Regarding Sir Ellice Victor Sassoon. While browsing to know about this gentleman, I found out He won the Epsom Derby on 4 occasions. Details as below.

PINZA was ridden by  Gordon Richards trained by  Norman  Bertie won in the year 1953.

CREPELLO  was ridden by Lester Piggott trained by Noel Murless in the year 1957.

Hard Ridden was ridden by Charles Smirke trained by Mick Rogers in the year 1958.

St. Paddy was ridden by Lester. Piggott trained by Noel Murless in the year 1960.

@ Indian_ Turf _ Record.

Thank you for acknowledging my post and providing additional details about the Jewish participation in Indian horse racing. Prior to 1967, I have no idea about the subject matter. Regarding Aris B. David, He hailed from a family of clergymen. Trainers Sydney Moses. and Haskell  David ( gathered information from my friend), both followers of Christian Faith. No idea about the Jockey Mannaseh (Madras based)

Recently I had a chat with a friend, who lives in New York, about AMERICAN PHAROAH who wrapped up the triple crown in Belmont Park( we were present ) owned by AHMED ZAYAT. I  thought this gentleman was a Muslim. My friend corrected me that Ahmed Zayat is a Jew.

Then I start thinking about Jewish participation here and posted the topic.

To add to posting @ Kolramsri.

Sir Victor Sassoon, long serving Chairman of RWITC, was a Jew whose contribution to Indian racing is immense. He came into racing when he purchased the entire racing interests in India and abroad,of Mr. Mathradas Goculdas who had become bankrupt following massive speculation. Sir Sassoon owned several good horses, he started Eve Bloodstock Scheme to get Indian breeding going and later won three Epsom Derbies. He is remembered for his quote "There is only one race greater than Epsom Derby. Jews."

Mr. Edward Esmaond was prominent owner-breeder in England and France. In India he raced with his brother Sir David Ezra. He owned Viceroy's Cup winners Sans Ame and Fastnet and many other good ones.

First Indian Derby was won by Renala Stud's Princess Beautiful (Short Hand - Roibelle by Sheridan). Renala Stud had purchased Short Hand from Mr. Esmond and Sheridan was gifted to Renala by Sir Sassoon.

First Indian Triple Crown winner Commoner was owned by Mr. Diamond (Mr. G.N. Musry) and trained by Sion F Nessim. Both Mr. Musry and trainer were Jews. Mr. Musry also owned Baqlava.

First trainer in India to saddle winners of 100 Classics was Aris B David. I think he was a Jew. I also think that trainers S. Moses and Haskell David were Jews but I am not very sure. Corrections appreciated.

In some other thread Mr. SC Sharma has mentioned Biscuit widden by Maneesh. Bisquit was actually ridden by a jockey called Mannaseh and that is  very Jewish name. I do not know if he was actually Jewish.

There are sure to be more names and it will be interesting to hear of them.

Friends, I am writing this personal experience and incident to bring out to all my friends the aspects of chance, luck, little bit of knowledge, paddock study, decisivenes and uncertainities of Horse Racing which happened with me way back in 1990. It was an important Racing weekend in calcutta and I was having my job in the East. With difficulty I  managed some leave and landed in Cal. to attend the  Races.

I have always liked playing Jackpot and this being a big day, the carry fwd jack pot was on offer.I had done lot of study for two previous days and was ready with my selections for the jackpot .Made the combination of:

3, 1,1 4,5= Rs 600. However, before buying the jackpot combination I wanted to see and study the Horses in the paddock. 4th Race was the first Race of the jackpot and when I was carefully looking at the Horse, I could see that the Horse I had liked in this Race looked very good and very well tuned up. Seeing this I decided to make it a banker, so now I modified my jackpot combination as: 1,1,1,5, 7= Rs 350.( Here I made some more modifications and  in the last leg, which was a 3year olds maiden race, it included two Horses which were first time runners and were sprinter breeds) I included these also and bought my jackpot combination for Rs 350.

The 4th Race started,a 1400 mtrs cup race, quite a few horses were trying and after a good fight my Horse won by a head verdict. 2nd and 3rd races were favourits and they won without much difficulty. Now the 4th Race, I had kept 5 Horses and wanted an outsider to win. Here 3rd favourite won and I was going to get a favourite very small jackpot. The 5th Race came and there was a hot favourite, odd on 3 year old colt and no body was looking beyond it. As luck would have it, it started raining and the going became some what wet and slippery. The race started, it was a sprint, hell for leather most of the runners were fighting, there was also some crowding, some bumping, boring and blocking and the hot fovourite had to run on the wide, the result was that at the wire it was beaten by a head by a horse which was 150 to 1 and I had kept this horse in my jackpot considering it to be a sprinter breed. The end result was, there was only one ticket for the jackpot and I was the lucky winner of the jackpot, which was for Rs 3 lakhs plus.

Moral of the story: Please see all the points I have mentioned in my first para. Now you all my friends, Take care, God bless and good luck.

Both the racing sites doing wonderful service with not so big resources at their disposal..They provide so much info to us while making selections. Had the present day I T was available during the early 70s many would not have lost heavily. We were in total darkness during that period. No knowledge about the conditions of the runners. Their earlier sickness is known only to the connections. No Race Day report.

As such the present-day punters have lots of info to exercise caution and place bets carefully.

This is about the Jewish community in Horse Racing India. Only 3 people come to my mind.  First one Mr. N.E. Raymond Trainer of GALILEE ( owned by Mrs. Medhora and Mrs, N.E.Raymond ), which won Bangalore Colts Championship and the Bangalore Derby in the year 1969 (Summer Racing)

The other two are Owners of MENORAH (Mrs. Mozelle Kelly and Mr. Solomon F.Sopher, Horse owner and breeder) which won the 1988  St.Leger

The MENORAH has been a symbol of Judaism.

It was way back in 1964. I was working and also doing my engineering in Pune. Had always loved horses, because my father was very fond of horses and always  kept good horses for riding  and touring.

I started going for races with some friends who were already into this mugs game, but I took it as a serious study and challenge and today after 56 years of learning and learning the nuts and bolts and numerous imponderables of Horse Racing IN INDIA  I strongly feel that you can only do reasonably well, by being very controlled, very careful, very selective, very calculative, very alert, very resourceful and much more and for that also you have to work very hard.

My friends, please dont misunderstand me as some of our friends have done it and I have also felt a little hurt. I also dont mean to discourage you and at the same time I wont like to brag about my achievements in Horse Racing.I would suggest that you  please take it as a suggestion and brotherly advise that Horse Racing is not a joke and is a very difficult way of making consistant money.  Yes, it is a very enjoyable hobby, entertainment and pass time if kept at that level and scale and under control. Big Gambling, NO, the success rate is very LOW and you have to always remember that. Good luck. Take care

It may be with racing knowledge or without racing knowledge.  It may be 10/-  bet or100/- bet or 2000/- bet.  It may be a bet on single horse or multiple horses in a single race.  It may be win bet or place bet.  It may be fist bet in his betting tenure or 10th bet or 2000th bet.  It may be single bet or group bet.

Chanakya will never never lose a single bet!  And the circumstances also will help them.  If he had got ticket/s to visit the movie, he would not have the opportunity to bet. So there also he is proved lucky.  He also got the movie ticket for evening show!

The bookies will give him place dividend even if the horse finishes 3rd in a six horse field.  The bookies may be on strike.  But they will accept the bets from Chanakya.  The race may be over by 1.30pm.  But, for that race, the bookies will accept lay bets at 5pm also and pay dividend.  The bookies may have displayed odds at 1.00, 1.10 etc.  But for Chanakya, they will allow 2.50 odds.  The odds may be double dash for place on any horse.  But for Chanakya, they will allow odds at 1/4th of win odds!  And do not insist that he should bet equal or higher amount for win!

Chanakya knows astrology, numerology.  He knows how to locate a winner. His system throws up a certain winner or his system may throw up several winners in a single race.  Sometimes his method will point to a horse that can place!  Sometimes his method points out a favorite that may lose.

Come on.  Let us all cheer Chanakya!

BUT LET HIM EXPLAIN HOW HE GOT 60 POINTS & 20 POINTS IN RECENTLY CONCLUDED MUMBAI/BNG/MYSORE RACES.

I entered racing during  BTC Summer season 1988.Within a few days  I was fortunate to witness the Filles Trial Stakes. V. Shinde on Nine Carat  and Warren Singh on Treasure Girl fought neck to neck for entire straight of the Course,  with the later prevailing in a tight photo finish. Once again the Summer Derby was a three horse finish between Treasure Girl (Aslam Kader up),  Nine Carat(V.Shinde up)  and Lucky Shrike (Warren up)  ,with Aslam winning the race.

In between, I also witnessed a fight between two all time greats Divine Light and  Brave Dancer with the later prevailing by a short head.

At the end of the season BTC Summer season 1988 , I had made a small loss of rs 1000 playing only on the tote but I was addicted to Brave Dancer,  the Horse and AslamKader, the jockey. Thereafter I visited the race course, just to play them. Both did not disappoint me.

In fact I became such an AslamKader fan that I would play him, even when I knew the horse lacked real merit. I was witness to AslamKader riding some great races, sometimes coming from impossible positions. One could attend races just to watch Aslam in action.

5 of  us,including  one  senior who  was  a  local Bangalorean; after lunch  decided  to  watch  RajKapoor's film  Sangam at  newly constructed  theater also  named  Sangam at  Kempgowda circle area. Jumped  into  a  taxi and  reached  the  hall but  found  that  matinee(2.30PM)  show was fully booked, therefore  booked  ticekts  for  evening  show. Now  question  arose  how  to  pass the time for  which  our  senior  suggested  that  let  us  go  to  racecourse which  was  nearby. We  followed  him  and  bought Rs. 2  concessional  ticket  to  members  enclosure...

Inside the  area was fully  packed with  the  gentry  of  Bangalore  in full  bloom, while most  of  them  were  never  seen  on  MG road or  Brigade Road or  commercial street  in  such  a  large  number. Our  senior  told  us  that  it  is  the  Derby  day and  that  is  the  reason  of their  presence. He  took  us  o  a  place  where  horses  wer  circiling  around and  he  told  us  it  is  called  paddock and  the  horses  movng  around  are  going  to  run in  the  race  called  Derby. He  said  he  is going  to  bet and are  we  interested to  bet. We  all  agreed and pooled money which  added  to  Rs. 400. He pointed  at  a  runner and  said  he  is  going  to place  bet  on  that runner. Except  him all  others  were  first  timers  so  there  was  no  question  of  disagreement.

The  race  started from  the  front  of  the  Grand  stand and  'our choice'  started  moving  up  gradually and  on  entering  straight our  senior  started  shouting  - move man,  move  man... we  echoed  his sentiments  by  shouting  same  words...

Finally  'our choice'  won the  race and  our  leader  went  to  collect the  win  He  came  back  and  showed us 10 crisp 100 rupee notes and  we  all  started  jumping  because  we  have  won  almost  600 rupees which  was  a  big  amout  those  days..

After  watching  the  movie we  went  to  Hotel  Bangalore  International and  watchd  a  caberet while  having  our  dinner from  the  winnings  of  the  day...

That  was  the  begining  of  the  journey which  is  still  continuing...

Hi all,

would like to share my bitter experience of racing not in punting but in trusting fellow persons... In the year 2012 I met a person called Raghavendra through social networking sites. He was also from Bangalore and had little knowledge about racing as usual he played and lost and I was in plus playing only 5 races max.. He was bankrupt and begged with me to play so I havg him credit and 15 lakhs he lost in one week. When I demanded money he asked what is the proof that I played. I have cough up all the money to he had criminal background which came to know  later.he went to jail in smuggling case. So I stopped asking him and prayed God. And after 3 years when I asked him 35k he said come will give you and he kidnapped me and got beaten Black and Blue... Gave police complaint but as usual influence made my case weak. Lesson learnt .. Never do bad for people most important don't do good too.... Now am working as food delivery guy ... Still there are so many people who owe me money are roaming in racing course... Like they own race course. Never mind... Justice will prevail one day... Admin please post this .... Thank you.

I am eagerly waiting to have big punters participation in this forum about their journeys in racing. Hope coming days they join us.

Twenty yrs back I went to Mumbai along with my co staff onnifficial duty. On April 30 exactly( I cudnt recollect year) last day Mumbai season. I told my co staff that I have some relatives at kalyan I visit them. He said ok then I gave him all money I had with me coz it's office amount and just took 1000 with me. We were staying in Dadar. I took return tkt to Mahalaxmi and frm stn I chalte chalay gaya. Kyun ki woh samai no share auto. Even though I visited Mumbai 2/3tines on shirt trip I didn't visited course. Inside Ist enclosure I was stunned to c such big course/bookies/counters. Bcoz it's last day  of season not big crowd. I freely roamed and enjoyed atmosphere so I totally forget to  follow race card correctly. Whatever comes in the way I played and lost all.just had 10 in my pocket  closing season awards were given in between and I remember C Rajendra received one cup. Then when I came out some one told abt Mahalaxmi Mandir. From there I went had Darshan and came back to Mahalaxmi station. With just 10 I had one Tea, two burbies. Whenbi came to room it was 10pm.my colleague freightened after seeing me only he became normal. He scolded me. Then we had dinner. Had very deep sleep. After that last three yrs back I went but first visit was memorable.bofcourse today's course is just Telecom jungle.

When most of the people revolve around 1979 invitation winner Own Opinion, there was a Sprinters Cup( forerunner to the present day Sprinters cup) conducted by RWITC. From Madras, S.Rangarajan owned SATINSKY ( T. Mckeown up ) was sent to take on Every Time( ridden by Karl Umrigar, the eventual winner ) in the Sprinters Cup, but it could finish Second. This happened in the 1979 Invitation weekend races. Every time was available at 6/4, Satinsky @2 and a half. All from memory.

How  Racing dismembered a group. We were a group normally meets in Drive-in woodlands hotel every Saturday Evening around 5.00 P.M and on Sunday morning for Breakfast. A close friend of mine (already a racegoer) took me to see the running of South India Derby ( GRAND JURY). Then mayhem started. Two of us were busy on Saturdays and Sundays in serious race discussions ostracised ourselves from the gang. Others in the group left us and the country and settled in Horse Racing Nations, leading a cozy life without developing any gambling Habits.

Royaltern was loved by all western India punters except Chennai. So on that count when it lost to OO  the prestigious cup, no one cud digest and hence RWITC decided to conduct an invitational race similar to Annual Invitation race to give Royal Tern a chance to lift the cup. OO not participated. That's how every Mumbai season at the tag end we have a race called RWITC invitational race.

I started from  BNG  in the 70s. We were part of the anglo indian  group .the   gave us good winners ar times at longer odds.

Ist was red satin in colts at 10 to1 against  Squanderer  In  the derby, it was 2,5.

Next i reme ber the win of manitou  in pouring  rain  in the derby with  late b  prakash;s    father Bhosle an app jockey.  In my entire racing career  i have never seen a jockey clinging on by  the  neck of  the horse in the last 100 mtrs.Thr horse won the race  again a t 10 to 1 He rermained    an app . jockey.

I got posted out and missed racing till a short span in pune in 1981 The horse  Another certainity a got abroad filly with Poonawala/ A comman friend  who knew  Aslam gave us a excellent bet at .70/100 . thes  horsze lost there were near riots and he was stood down after the race.We left pune   later on

came to know it won 16 races without a break!

Raci ng may resume by mid june   subjected to normalcy . Let us hope for the best,

7 april in a critical date for COVID as 15 days gone by ban on intern ational flights completes, it A drop   in  COVID  it is very positive for us

Thanks Drk. This s what this forum expect from punters. We can talk abt horses trainerrs owners multiple times. Infact those things everybody wud know from race card, results, dividents.

But individual life before entering race course or after entering into race course, whether tried to stop racing or what make them to continue in racing. I seriously expected many big time punters would pour in with their life changes. But only few like Halls, Guru and ur self informed reason behind race course venture.

I myself seriously thought of stoping of racing several times. But it wud not continue even for two meetings. I wud go back to race course with full of energy, interest, vigourous. I like this sport, I like horses, like it's pony stlye, I like jokeys attairs, I like close finishes. I don't bother even I lose money. Bcoz after 47 yrs why shd I save money ? But one thing I upset most is these days merit of the horse is not shown. Trainers, owners,Jockeys setup every racing. I request trainers, owners,Jockeys, clubs pl god's sake atleast in big races allow the horses which r gifted by God to run like a bullet, thunder, machine. If that's hapoen in big races we all wud witness Terrific races like the one witnessed in Chennai long years back in Delage winning.

I was fortunate to have watched this race live. A lot has been said in the past (and rightfully so) about the brilliant tactics employed by the connections of Own Opinion and some reports have even credited jockey Christy Roche for coming up with the game plan. What has not been said and what struck me the most was how this race served to demonstrate how great Royal Tern was. Just think about it. It took the combined might of three top class horses ridden by top class experienced jockeys to tame Royal Tern with a relatively inexperienced though great Karl Umrigar astride and that too just by half a length. I remember that Invitation more for the awesome, larger than life display put up by Royal Tern than the tactical coup pulled off by the Own Opnion camp. Salute Royal Tern!

Dear Arvind sir I wish I join punters forum and exchange lot of information. During mid 70s I was incharge of IMFL for whole of Nilgiris and obviously known to everyone, including a number of big guys, race horse owners, trainers and jockeys. And a number of jockeys used to stay with me and my friends. Particularly Komandur senior, a great gentleman, used to stay in my uncle's house every year for the season. Like wise trainer RS Reddy, a cool n honest person, used stay our locality where we arrange accmdn. That's how I entered racing, ofcourse as a punter lost a lot but still keep going. We can see honest owners, trainers, jockeys at that time. I cannot forget JK Irani sir of SD group who was so friendly, took me to Mysrore and even offered me an opportunity out of fondness but unfortunately I couldn't, my parents not allowed. Like wise RS Reddy also want to take me to Hyderabad which again not happened. Still I am fine with my family and leading a normal life, easygo. As far as racing is concerned nowadays I used to play one or two races a day either win or place, mostly place. I used to play only in the last minute. I play only 3 year olds taking into consideration breed, distance, horse merit, owner--trainer-jockey combination, horse weight, paddock look and also expert opinion in this column etc.  If a won one or two races I will keep quite and watch fun, incase I lost inmy first bet then no control I am one among the ordinary punter. Hope not boring you, rest let us share later. Thanks a lot for sharing my experience, more to come please bear with me.

@BVS Prasad dear sir Own Opinion was stationed at Bangalore and raced against Royal Turn. MAM used Red Chieftan as a pacemaker to hoodwink Shinde (on RT if I am correct) and won the Derby with Own Opinion.

I request members to pour in such topic wud be enjoy to read by all.

As far as Own Opinion s concerned it won Colts stake and Nilgiris Derby in Ooty before going to Bangalore. Coz of old age I cudt recollect minute details but this Own Opinion case is sure. In Derby Tulipa owned by katau family all the way from Mumbai ridden by great Karl Umrigar. It finished second.

This is about 10,000 Rupees fine imposed on the Jockeys by Madras Race Club, and RWITC.

First Madras Race Club. It fined Jockey Raymond Carrol Rupees 10,000 for causing interference to 3 horses(owned by the Stewards of the club) while winning on TRIDENT(owned by Thambusamy, whose family members now racing in Bengaluru and Hyderabad) I heard it was the first time A jockey was fined 10,000 Rupees. This incident happened sometime in 1977 or 1978. I am not sure.

Secondly, in a mile race(before Indian 2000 guineas), Smart Chieftan was ridden by R, Hughes, conceding weight all round won the race. He was fined rupees 10,000 for riding an overconfidence race. What is of interest is, for the first time I saw a Jockey ( R. Hughes) patting the back of M.A.M. Ramasamy, on the Race Track. This happened in November of 1999.

Attn. B.V.S.PRASAD. Regarding Own Opinion. It won Nilgris 2000 Guineas and Nilgiris Derby in the year 1978 as a 3-year-old ( 1975 Foal). It won a solitary classic win in Guindy 1979 South India St. Leger.

Arvind sir I would like to join you but as I'm little busy now pl excuse me for the time being.  Hope we are known to each other if you still in Ooty.

@ Kolmasri you are spot-on. Actually the previuos day evenig to the Colts trial stakes myself and a few friends (one Mr.Srikandan,w is unfortunately komore, might be known Arvind sir also, I hope) were gone for an outing to Mudumali and spent lot of time together. During casual discussion Jockey Smith said 'ofcourse MAMs horse will win, which should be money-back favourte, but I will definitely give  tuff fight comewhatmay and you guys watch the fun'.  Asper his words entire 1400 MTR the race was neck n neck nailbighting, finally Smith won on Miracle chip. That horse could not take any food for the next three days I was told. Thanks

I first stepped on to the Mahalaxmi race course in early seventies for the Pune races. There was no monsoon track in Pune in those days. Races used to be run in terrible going when it rained. There were some specialist mudlarks like Vajar Sen. Our group had been given Interlaken as a 'moral centainty' by the owner. Interlaken was to be ridden by the top jockey Ernie Alford. It was a 1800 meters race and the going was soft. We all put in Rs 5 each and backed Interlaken with untmost confidence and hope. It was our first experience of betting on horses and we were full of excitement and expectations. As the gates opened Grecian Flower ridden by Madan Singh went into the lead with Interlaken following a couple of lengths behind...........and that was how they remained at the finish. All of us had lost on a 'moral certainty' given by the owner himself. It was enough to arouse our curiosity. Although we had lost, it was a 'paisa vasool' experience.

The following all from memory. Since it is about Madras Race Club conducted races, finding information is next to impossible.

Two horses contested Classic race could be Nilgris 2000 guineas race of 1979..Runners could be the winner Miracle Chip( Smith ridden) from My Opinion( ridden by Jagdish). Corrections are welcome. Repeat. I have no record to prove . All from memory.
