Re: Memories

By Indian_turf_record | 13-Apr-2020

The thread starteed by Dustageer ullah was about the sad passing away of former jockey.trainer N. Shanker. A simple R.I.P., as posted by many, is sufficient.  But claims of how you backed his horse at 8 to 1 or exchanging memories totally unconnected with the departed man is not befitting. You can start a new thread for that.

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY (gr f 1977 Fey Legend - Winter Holiday) was bred by Kr. Manjitinder Singh at his Malwa Stud in Faridkot. She raced in his ownership throughout her career and was traineed by J.S. Dhariwal. She won three races:-

4 Jun 1980 Ooty Manipal Plate 1200 m. 3YOs. Jockey Wills

7 Sep 1980 Hyd Poona Stud Plate 1200 m. Cl. VA Jockey Nasir Beg

20 Mar 1981 Che Pratap Stud Plate 1400 m. Cl IV Jockey J. Sebastian

CLIVE ECCLESTON was an English jockey born on 8 July 1947. In 1969, when apprenticed to trainer Frank Carr, he rode 41 winners to become the Champion Apprentice Jockey. He first came to India in 1977-78 and rode his first winner on his ninth ride on a horse called Jericho. He rode 32 winners that winter season at Bangalore and was second to Karan Singh. Next year, he rode 22 winners and was third to Karan Singh and Jagdish. Though he did not win the Championship himself, he enabled his principal patron S. Moses to finish as Champion Trainer in both seasons. In 1979-80 he was based at Chennai, riding for D.M. Hill and had a moderate season with just 9 wins. He rode one winner at Bangalore and 2 at Hyderabad. He does not appear to have come to India in 1980-81 and 1981-82 and further records have not been checked.

MERRY LEGS (Glory of Andhra - Midnight Star) won three races in her career and was saddled by Dixon on all three occasions.

Hello I_T_R,

Browsed through ir.com past results and got the name.

BWM 2014-15 WINTER SEASON.
27th Dec'14.

The name of the horse was Meherani.
Trained by S.Dominic and ridden by M.Mark.
Shp paid Rs 748/- and place Rs 221/-.

The sole reason for playing was because the rider and trainer were christians and being christmas period, they proved to be my Santa Claus just like Eccleston and D.M.Hill did during 1979-80 Madras season.

In racing, sometimes, these inane reasons fetch you handsome dividends.

Hello I_T_R,

I may havefailed to recall the incidents in true order but that does not mean that I am wrong of the mentioned events.

The first long shot, that too at 60 to 1, is something that one can never get it wrong.

Christmas Holiday running during summer holidays ( vacation ) is no reason for trigerring old memories. It does only if it happens   ( runs ) during christmas vacation.

And yes, I_T_R, just about 48 hours before, you failed to spot Arcane when you had the record book, Fonn's I presume, right in front of you.

And here I am trying to recant from memory of a race/s that took place 40 years ago. May be my memory may have overlooked or by passed some of the reasons for having played Arcane in which Christmas Holiday ran 2nd.

Like I said before, perhaps because both the trainer and the rider were christians.

The same theory fetched me handsome dividends a few years ago. Trainer was S.Domonic and rider was M.Mark. Let me go through the reults of the past winter seasons ( B'lore winter ) and I shall tell you the name. The horse finished 2nd. May be during 2015-16 season.

regds,
Cruise
Will get back on that.

Hello I_T_R,

We had an extended vacation that year. Reason being that all Europeamn schools were asked to switch from Dec to dec curriculum to April to April for or from the year 1980.

One can never forget the first long-shot winner. You can quote record books but in this case, my memory is not playing any tricks ( regarding Rubynella ).

I could be doubted for failing to recant the Arcane/Christmas holiday episode in the right sequence but the fact that it did happen during the mentioned period ( 1979-80 Madras season ) cannot be denied.

I may have gone for it because of the christian connections ( trainer D.M.Hill and jockey Eccleston ) but the fact that it made my christmas vacation memorable is still etched ivivid and clear in my memory.
Only the reaspns for having played it remains a bit muddled.

Anyway, it has refreshed much of the memory and you certainly did play a big role in reviving that. Couldn't have been possible without your feedback.

regds,
Cruise

@ Cruise_B'lore

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY was beaten by an Eccleston ridden horse on 15 January 1980. By that date, Christmas was long over and so too the Christian connection. Which is why I did not mention it.

I can tell you though, as a friend, that your memory is playing tricks on you. You mention, "The main reason being trainer D.M. Hill. He is the one who gave me my first long shot winner -- Rubeynella at odds of 60/1."

I presume you are referring to Rubynella's victory in Nilgiris Fillies' Trial Stakes. That race was run on  much later, on 20 April 1980 and can have no bearing on your reason for backing Arcane on 15 January 1980, By the way, Rubynella paid Rs. 60 on Tote (Rs. 5 Tote) and the result book shows her as being 12/1 on the books. Christmas Holiday was the long-shot at 50/1 in the Nilgiris Fillies' Trial Stakes.

All the same, let's put the matter to bed. If you are satisfied, I have nothing to say.

Cruise. When there was no mention by Indian_Turf_Record about ROYAL JEWEL, I dropped the matter after reading his head post on 13.04.2020

You have posted Christmas Holiday did score and made it a memorable Christmas vacation.  I suggest you go through the Madras race results of 23.12.1979 and 21.12.1980. Both the days being Sunday there is a likelihood of race for the juveniles. I don"t know why this matter is bothering you.

@Indian_turf_record, thanks no problem, based on their performances in 100 odd races of 2/3 yr old runs in2012-13 winter season I tried to  ratie them on their performances,  if you go through Bangalore(w)2013-14winter races index to results you will find rating there is no need to go through runs of Bangalore summer 2014,some of them may have participated at other centres.

Hello I_T_R,

Many thanks for your help.

You could have more helpful had you stated that Christmas Holiday had lost to a C.H.Eccleston horse which was trained by D.M.Hill during the mentioned period ( 1979-80 ).

Would have saved you a lot of time and me, much of my anxiety.

Anyway, your assistance was of much help.

Hello folks,

I get it now.

Christmas Holiday was the trigger for the memory to revive.

Now it comes flooding back.

It wasn't Christmas Holiday but rather Arcane that I had played.

The main reason being the trainer - D.M.Hill.
He is the one who gave me my first long-shot winner - Rubynella at odds of 60/1.

On the mentioned race day, the juvenile race had featured Christmas Holiday and Arcane.
I went for Arcane because of the trainer ( of Rubynella ) and also because the trainer as well as the rider were both christians.

Well, that solves the mystery.

@ ksmrow

Ratings are dynamic and keep changing. I have mostly printed records and even those do not have ratings listed. Besides, 37 horses is a rather tall order.

However, if I had to find out the official rating of Agostini (for example) at the start of Bangalore summer season 2014, I would open Agostini's page on this site. His first race of that season was on 8 June and if I open the result of that race, I would see Agostini rated at 104. It is not foolproof method but best I can think.

@ Cruise_B'lore

15 Dec 1979, Chennai. Novice Plate, 1000 m. 2YO Maidens. Both Arcane (Krishnan, 10/1) and Christmas Holiday (Perumal, 15/1) ran and finished off board.

    15 Jan 1980, Chennai. Tejpur Plate, 100 m., 3YO Maidens.

     1.  ARCANE (Eccleston) (5/1)

     2. Christmas Holiday (Wills) (3/1)

     3.  Rose Parade (Murtagh( (2/1, favourite)

      Won by Hd, 3 lengths.

I can't see where this is leading to  but I am sure you will keep us all informed when mystery is solved.

The other two winners that Eccleston rode were Irish Love for Jaggy Dhariwal and  Arcane, which I had missed in my earlier posting, for D.M. Hill. Apologies for the earlier omission.

No bother at all. Feel free to ask anything anytime. I do sincerely beilive that while memories are golden, facts are sacrosanct.

Sorry to be of much bother, could you please name the other 2 winners.
Were they for any of the Thompson brothers?

Appreciate your co-operation and help in unravelling the confusion with regards to the winner played by me.

CLIVE ECCLESTON rode 9 winners during 1979-80 winter season at Madras but only 7 of them were for trainer D.M. Hill :-

  Robinson Crusoe

  Enter The Red, twice

 St. Hilaire

  Winged Light

  Duke of Wellington

  Noble Man

As mentioned in the head-post, Eccleston does not appear to have ridden in India in 1980-81.

STAR COURT (ch f 1978 Fey Legend - Winter Holiday)

In 1980-81 raced 10 times at Hyderabad, Ooty and again at Hyderabad in monsoon season. Won five races (winning jockeys T. McKeown, Wills, B Mathews and B Shanker). Trainer A. Thompson shown as the trainer in first three wins and R.W. Alford in last two.

In 1981-82 raced 11 times at Hyderabad, Ooty, Bangalore and again Hyderabad. One win in Hyderabad monsoon under Vishwas, trainer R.W. Alford.

Owned by M/s. T.V. Rama Rao, G Narayana Rao & T. Prakasa Rao and Mrs. Kusuma M. Satyanarayana Murthy in all wins. Further records not checked.

Does not seem to have raced at Guindy or ridden by C.H. Eccleston in first two years.

Jockey Clive Henry Eccleston was initially apprenticed to ERIC COUSINS, became the top apprentice in 1969 with 41 winners when attached to Frank Carr's Malton stable.

His first winner was Gallic Belle in the 3.30  at  CARLISLE on August 27, 1964. He won two Big races, the THIRSK HUNT CUP, and the  EDINBURG GOLD CUP. He also won the1975 VauxGold Tankard on PARBLOND.

However, with just 4 winners in 1979, he was unable to sustain his early promise, he left to try his luck abroad, principally in India. He raced in Saudi Arabia in 1980 but went back to England in May and was cleared by the Jockey Club to ride in England again. He has 3 daughters. One from the First marriage the other two from his second marriage.

I am 74 and my memory fails often. But when I present here what was reported earlier, I exercise proper caution.

Thanks in advance.
