First, I am not here to deceive, and there is no 350 million worth Sean Connery participating in HT.

Now about Eric Eldin,  came to India in 1953, won the Indian Derby on Feb 6.1955 on Rough Deal trained by J. Thompson. Eldin Became a trainer in 1981. Without much success, he took the unusual step of becoming a tour guide, escorting his passengers into The National Horseracing Museum's Mini Bus for their tour of  New Market town, the Gallops, and the Race Course.

What is of interest, is his grandson Nicky Mackay finished second on TROUVAILLE in the Indian Derby of 2020. Has any other visited Jockey and his grandson participated in Indian Derby or in any other regional Derbies?

( Nicky Mackay's mother Lorraine is the daughter of Eric Eldin)

The art of fooling has been perfected by you and your pardner. One essays the role of a hound and the other of a hunter.

@ Cruise,

Thunderstorm was not a Cl VB horse( those days cl V was termed as cl VB)  when it won the Indian Derby, but it had started winning from cl VB and then won the Indian Derby. The horse originally belonged to Maharaja of Gawaliar and was a very bad starter, used to lose lots of lengths at the gates. It was sold and the new trainer was Dara pandole when it started taking good jump and won quite a few races (dont remember the exact figs) before winning the Indian Derby in a very close finish at longer odds ( I think from Loyal Prince and Lookout)

It was a very great race to watch, a real treat.

Indian Horse Racing fooling all the punters all the time.

Sorry, My dear 16th President of the U.S. According to David.B.Parker, "Actually, we don't know when He said it, or even if he had said it at all. The above attributions were offered nearly half a century after the fact, and are generally considered unreliable.

Hello folks,

Indian Derby:

13 - One brother gave the FIRST winner of the Indian derby whereas the other gave the LAST ( final one ) for The Grand Old Man Of Indian Racing - Dr M.A.M. Ramaswamy
The above could also be stated as the Father gave the first victory and son the last.
1996 - AMAZING BAY ridden by Satish Narredu
2015 - BE SAFE ridden by Suraj Narredu ( son ) and trained by Malesh Narredu ( brother )

14 - The only trainer to have scored a hat-trick, that too twice, is R.R.Byramji.
1976 - COMMANCHE
1977 - SQUANDERER
1978 - MANITOU
&
1993 - ASTRONOMIC
1994 - LITTLEOVER
1995 - ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL

15 - R.R.Byramji could have become the first trainer to score four-in-a-row but for the ban imposed on him by Rwitc.
1980 - MOHAWK trained by R.R.Byramji.
1981 - TRACK LIGHTNING trained by him but saddled by Tassi Shring.
1982 - ALMANAC trained by the legend but saddled by Nosher Cama.
1983 - NELSTON schooled by him but C.A. Kutappa got the honour of parading him.

16 - The only rider to score a hat-trick of wins: Pesi Shroff
1989 - EXHILARATION
1990  - DESERT WARRIOR
1991 - STARFIRE GIRL

17 - The only Stallion to have scored a hat-trick of wins: Grey Gaston
1983 - NELSTON ( Grey Gaston x Nelciana )
1984 - ENTERPRISING ( Grey Gaston x Salvation )
1985 - REVELATION ( Grey Gaston x Monica )

18- The first owner to score a hat-trick of wins : Ranjit V. Bhat
1976 - COMMANCHE
1977 - SQUANDERER
1978 - MANITOU

19 - The only instance of a pacemaker emerging victorious: Noble Eagle
Noble Eagle was expected to set the pace for Dhunjibhoy-owned trio of  Zurbaran, Aldenburgh and Spaniards Inn but destiny willed otherwise.

20 - The trio of Pesi Shroff, Satish Narredu and Malesh Narredu have won the Indian derby, both as riders as well as when licensed as trainers.

Rest in next.

The biggest upset race was in Indian St. Ledger at Pune, Lindon Flora(30-1) beating Mantiou(3/10) in the field of 3 horses. Please correct if any error in the figure.

Hi Savio,

Regarding Thunder Storm, it wasn't my observation. I read of it in racing world magazine. The article was pened by well-known bloodstock agent Anil Mukhi.

The remaining 11 observations are all mine based on my racing which began in 1979. They are all my conclusions and are not universal.

Dear, I Spy. Something about an Australian Jockey. His name is Edward James Cracknell. In April 1952, Eddie received a six months retainer of 3000 pounds ( was in addition to PRESENTS)from two stables while riding in India.

Ayyarnet was not fortunate to be in Happy Valley on 30.501977 when Cracknell rode35/1 shot SWINGER to Victory. That was his last ride. Sometime in late Seventies Cracknell came to India and got trainers license from BTC.and trained ATTATURK, which won twice in Bangalore Summer Racing in 1980. Lord of the Racing Ring Late M.A.M bought Attaturk with a lot of expectations. but it could get him a solitary classic in Hyderabad Hyderabad Colts championship Grade 3 in 1980.

Eddie Cracknell won the Calcutta Derby 5 times. He was also a leading jockey on 3 occasions in India. Eddie aged 72 died on 4 April 1999.

@ Venkat

1- Noble eagle was with MK.Jadhav owned by Shirke's, after it winning a preparatory race of 1600 m on top weight beaten favourite everedy(Khaitan/IA.Sait) . changed stables to Vinayak with adding Dhunjibhoy also to owner band. It paid 1213 rs on bangalore tote.

2- Velvet rope is owned by Shivan Surendranath and Ajith Agashe..It developed a fetlock problem after invitation and retired from racing.

Instead of posting a new thread, I will use this thread to post on utter flukes in the Indian Derby from my recollection. All the derby winners that I will enumerate laid me low!!

The 1st winner that comes to my mind is the win of Mohawk( Indian Derby 1980) ridden by swinbuen. Trained by the Legend RR Byramji, Mohawk was a giannt doosra that day. I recall vividly Sandy Barclay gave a poor run to the favourite Everynsky. I had a neat package on Everynsky that day and I was hoping to encash the win for buying my wedding gift. I was shell shocked. Its another story that Everynsky won the invitation and I somewhat recovered since I had to borrow from the hundi bazaar to keep my momentum. Mohawk after this spectacular win disappeared!!

The second was Noble Eagle ridden by Jockey Pradeep Belose (Indian Derby 2003) on a star to finish mission!! The pace setter won!! Again, Noble eagle disappeared from the classic scene. the biggest loser was the combo of M/S Shirke and Dhunjibhoy who purchased NE soon thereafter!!

The third one was Velvet Rose and at the time, it was a subject of controversies. The great Mystical was beaten. Velvet rose was owned by the Dhunjibhoys and he was also if my memory serves me right the RWITC Chief at that time. We did not see the Velvet thereafyter!!

The fourth one was Antonious( Indian Derby 2009). Won at long odds with the brazilian jockey Sesousa in the saddle beating Set Alight ( with none other than the Mallesh Narredu in the saddle) giving it a poor ride!! Lost a small packet too that day at 75/100, however, I had wagered Antoniuous in place too. Antonious too disappeared fro the classic scene.

Thye fifth one was Topmost(Indian Derby 1974). Won at very long odds and I had a lucky bet(infact it was my 1st bet in my life) on Topmost each way. I used to know the owner of Topmost ( the dases) from my Calcutta days. I wish though in retrospect, I had not gone into the race course. A very addictive sport even though;it is a King of Sports. Unlike others Topmost won the Invitation too that year.

Just to keep the adreneline going.

Cheers

Hello folks,

INDIAN DERBY:

1 - The most thrilling victory: Astonish over La Bonnie Vie

2 - The closest finish involving multiple horses: Track Lightning winning in a 4-horse photo-finish. Each were separated by head at the finish ( the first four )

3 - The most cheekiest finish: Richard Hughes going for the narrow gap between Becket and the rails towards close of race.

4 - The only maiden horse to have won the mother of all events: Pyare Miya

5 - The rider who enjoyed as well as suffered the consequence of a 'Shd' verdict: Aslam Khader
He was praised for his riding on Astonish but 10yrs later, he lost by a 'Shd on Ansbach and it didn't take long for him to lose his job with late Deepak Khaitan.

6 - The only horse by a sire known more for speed rather than stamina to have won The Indian Triple Crown: Almanac ( Common Land x Clocked )

7 - The most gutsy winner: Chaitanya Chakram
He set his own pace to win in a photo-finish at close ( from Capricorn )

8 - The most unfortunate horse: Adler
He could have easily won but was forced to give the Indian derby the go-by because he suffered a deep gash in the Indian 2000gn ( banged against the rails soon after the finish )

9 - The most fortunate winner: Supervite
She got the race because the original winner, Saddle Up, was disqualified for having tested positive.

10 - Rider's lapse which cost the horse dear ( for making his move LATE ): Southern Empire.
Southern Empire had won all his previous races by multiple lengths but the rider's overconfidence cost him dear in the Indian derby. He was asked to do too much in the straight.

11 - Rider's error which cost the horse dear ( for making his move EARLY ): Set Alight
I think everyone knows about the inglorious ride of Mallesh  Narredu.

12 - The only Class Vb horse to have won the Indian derby: Thunderstorm
He started the 1969-70 Mumbai season in the bottom class but went on to annex the derby ( in that very season ).

More in next.

The best ever Indian derby was NOBLE EAGLE(p.belose) being ridden as a pace maker for the fav zubaran(Aslam khader) winning  start to finish.in the year 2003.odds was 100/1.

The best ever invitation cup was not  QUASAR winning but BE SAFE made to lose by the narredu clan.

In my opinion best ever Indian Derby must be the win by Elusive Pimperneil 1995 Derby winner out of 21-22 horses he was 19 at the bend position and still won the derby. Aslam kader riding imagine the pressure he must have experianced at the bend position. he was favourite in the Derby. 2-3 years back video was made available on U tube. Worth watching again.

In my memory, the best Indian Derby is 2006 , won by Velvet Rope, given whopping amount on Bangalore tote. I flown from Kualalumpur to Bangalore only to attend that race.

The best  Invitation race in my view is of Forest Fantasy won on start finish Satheesh ridden a determined race with an iron grip on the filly. She moved like a Benz at Malakpet course.
