Jockey David Egan

By Cool Boy | 02-May-2020

Hi folks

This year we had a tremendous rider visiting our stores in David Egan son of John Egan n Richard Hughes nephew.

He won his first classic on Gift of Grace in the 1000 Guineas n followed with the Oaks at Bangalore on Anjeze.

Reminds of the Mumbai season of 87-88 where a young Irishman also called David rode Au Panache to victory in the 1000 Guineas n won several races at Hyderabad. He also repeated thr next tear on All Beauty.

Alas that was the last of him, as he passed in an accident in Irelanc in thr summer of 1990.

I was new n only followed Mumbai then, a lad of 19.

expert comments on this pls.

Cheers

Cool Boy

@ Phantom

When we call a jockey a "master puller" and accuse him of "hoodwiking of Stewards", we have to be very careful that our facts are correct.  Your story does not quite add up.

If I read the sequence of events correctly, Royal Mantle won a 2000 m race during Bangalore Summer, was "pulled" as  a 25 paisa favourite and later won Calcutta Derby at long odds.

Royal Mantle did win Kunigal Stud Cup (not Army Cup), 2000 m., in Bangalore Summer where he was ridden by Parnell. Thereafter, in the next six races till Calcutta Derby, he was NEVER ridden by R.F. Parnell so the jockey cannot be blamed.

By the way, ROYAL MANTLE was trained by Shri Charan; not Charan Singh.

An Irsh lady who I met in Calcuua said on seeing R F Parnell, what the heck he can pull a steam engine. Strong rider. Sure enough he pulled a horse @25p which had won the Army cup 2000 meters in great style in Bangalore Summer. Trained by the astute Charn Singh.from Calcutta. In the Calcutta Derby it was ridden by another hard rider in M.Shafuq. It won in great style at 20:1 and the poor owner sold his house in Hastings to the trainer having lost all in the earlier race backed down to 25p. The horse was Royal Mantle. There was a long stewards enquiry at that loss but then the master puller Parnell easily hoodwinked the RCTC stewards of that time.

Hi

Next year 1988 he wln on All Beauty

If he had not passed early, we would have heard more from him rather than a certain K Fallon who rrplaced him at Dallas' stable during Mumbai season.

Hello Cool Boy,

There is an interesting fact that you need to now about All Beauty's victory in the Indian 1000gn.
All Beauty was consideed more of a sprinter cum mid-range performer than a miler. His trainer wasn't too keen to run the horse in the said classic. It was only on the INSISTENCE of the owner, I think it was Solomon F. Sopher, she partook in the race to emerge triumphant after a grim battle with Roccoboroco ( may have got the spelling wrong ).

As for his father, R.F.Parnell, if my memory serves me right, did partner Christoffe in a few of the classics. He was strongest ( hard ) rider that came from abroad. One could see welts on the horse's back after the finish, for so hard was he in whipping. Next on my list is Ronnie Butfoy.

Sad that David passed away young.
May his soul stay blessed!

regds,
Cruise

Yes Cheer boy, David Parnell won Indian 1000G on Au panache at Mumbai during 1987. Very sad he lost his life in a car accident at the age of 24.

David Egan is a brilliant jockey and won many races, I use to play most of his mounts. Hope we can see him in action atleast by next year.
