Re: Ken Stott

By Indian_turf_record | 04-May-2020

It was David Parnell who brought me to Ken Stott so let's finish with Parnell first. Father R.F. "Buster" Parnell and son David Parnell rode in India in 1980s. they were moderately successful riding about 60 to 70 winners in five seasons  each that  they spent in India. Two accomplishments of David Parnell have not been mentioned. One he was Champion Jockey at Malakpet in 1983-84 on his first visit at age of 19. (Any younger Chamoion Jockeys age in Winter Season ?). Two he won three Classics in India. His win on Abbeydale in Bangalore Oaks for trainer Harish Puri is missed out.

On opening day of Malakpet winter season of 1983-84, jockey Ken Stott had three rides for trainer S. Reddy and won them all. Treble to start to start off in India is not something which is common. He never rode again at Malakpet so he never lost a race there. Is that unique ?

Next day, Ken Stott had three mounts at Bangalore. He placed fourth on two and was unplaced on one. He does not appear to have ridden in India after that. (Manual search so liable for errors and omissions).

Does anybody know why he left India so suddenly ? I have checked "jockeypedia" (they ask you to check if spelling is correct) and Google tells me that he later settled down in Denmark. Malakpet had inkling before Google because his first winner in India was Copenhagen

Dane Kevin Stott based in Yorkshire with Kevin Ryan but used regularly by the likes of  Saeed Bin Suroor. The Stott name would be far more familiar to regulars at KLAMPENBORG. Kevin's father  Ken Stott is from England, started his riding from New Market, went to India and Africa. Not without much success ended up in Scandinavia, where he met his wife. For some time he took to training after hanging the boots in Copenhagen. Later he handed over the operation to another son Marc. Ken Stott seems to be an ordinary Jockey, otherwise, we would have gathered some information. Even though Sweden was paying much higher than England, Scandinavian racing did not attract much attention in racing circles.

After posting this new topic it occured to me that Karl Umrigar was also very young when he became the Champion Jockey at Mumbai at end of 1978-79 winter season.

Having checked records it was found that both Umrigar and Parnell had completed their 18th year. But Umrigar was born in October so he was slightly younger than Parnell whose birthday was in June.

Very unfortunate that both promising jockeys met tragic fate so soon after becoming Champions.
