Happy And Lucky — Says M F Poon

By S C Sharma | 08-Jun-2020

The 25 yr old M F Poon created sensation with his four wins in a 10 race card on sunday at Sha Tin, Hong Kong races. He holds the South Australian Champion Apprentice  record of 2015-2016 on his name and joined HK race -  riding in March, 2017. His career wins average total pts / meetings strike rate is 8.46 and he is 10th on table out of 20 riders. Sunday's his first win 1-3 Great Son available at odds 27.8 for win and 7.1 for place. Second win 3-11 Mighty Valour available at odds 5.0 for win and 1.05 for place. Third win 9-2 Hello Daddy available at odds 12.7 for win and 3.6 for place. Last and fourth win of the day was on 10-1 Perfect Match available at odds 5.6 for win and 1.1 for place all as per tote dividends. No doubt since last few meetings HK races are conducted under partial or full cloud cover and the weather is either rain or thunderstorm in between races or before or after  races forcing the track moisturised or becoming soft. Sunday too before the race it was reported the going as  good but as the day progressed at the time of race declared  / become as soft.
After his best four wins M F Poon simply stated " I am happy and lucky to have four wins which I too didn't expected." He further added " the rain we had meant that conditions must have suited my horses and they were able to perform so I had all the benefits."

What is your opinion ?  Is really rain meant favourable conditions for him or others not performed to their potential or ridden safe on slippery track without much  vigorous efforts. The interpretation can go either way but no denial to the fact that hardly 15 - 20  percent results are on expected lines  for HK races or may have even less and majority races are dominated by unfancied runners having unimpressive past records and proving the media and tipsters  majority predictions as wrong. I am not taking away any credit from M F Poon nor playing after the race blame game politics, on the contrary and   in fact wish to congratulate him  ( M F Poon ) and wish him many more successes and laurels. If others are not interested or making his task easy is no way M F Poon's concern. He is riding at his best  with full energy and vigour and staying focused on his job on hand. He deserves all kudos at a time when top three jockeys on table not delivering to the expectation.

This is first time I took interest in international racing due to corona pandemic crisis situation and to kill my dull time at home by watching live races or by listening live radio commentary. I read the statement of J Moreira before last sunday's meeting where he stated " hoping to perform better on sunday ".  and in fact he fancied his 3-4 runners but able to win only  one on  " Leap of Faith." Another fancied and backed runner " War of courage" lost by short head and another one "  Heza beauty"  finished third.   On the other hand Z Purton returned empty with zero wins but he is still heading the table with 128 wins, followed by J Moreira on 124 wins and others are not looks  in contention. The championship coming close and new champion will be declared on 15th July.
This week a nine race card framed for happy valley night racing on wednesday, first race to start at 4.15 pm ( IST )  with all top three riders having mounts in all nine races and hope as usual racing will be competitive and exciting and rain God will be merciful for smooth conduct of the proceedings.

Stay at home, stay safe and enjoy your routine with positive frame of mind. God bless you all.
