Hkjc Having Incredible Surface For Horse Racing

By S C Sharma | 12-Jun-2020

I observed from my experience of last few weeks Hong Kong horse racing activities that weather is fast changing at HK and  often clouds gathers, starts raining or at times racing is  effected by passing thunderstorms but horse racing activity  continues  uninterrupted and as per schedule. On 6th and 7th June it rained quite heavily and going declared as soft from good but racing continued.

One of the popular racing writer at HK Trenton Akers reported on last sunday 7th June that Sha Tin is one of the few race tracks on the planet that could have raced on safely after being hit with 500 mm of rain. 7th June Sunday's races were conducted when until first race from Saturday 6th June morning the surface was on the receiving end of the epic deluge. There are not too many race tracks in the world that can take that level of precipitation in such a short period of time with that intensity. It is really a  incredible surface.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club conducts horse racing at two venues. One at Sha Tin where normally day racing is conducted on sundays and secondly at Happy Valley where midweek night racing is conducted normally on wednesdays. The HKJC is one of the oldest institutions in HK having been founded on 4th Nov. in 1884. In 1959 it was granted a Royal Charter and renamed - The RHJC - reverted to its original name in 1996 due to the transfer of sovereignty of HK . The club evolved into professional institution from 1971. HKJC conducts nearly 1000 horse races per year at its race tracks at Sha Tin and Happy Valley with over 1000 horse owners, about 25 trainers and more than 30 jockeys participation and had more than 1500 horses in training. HKJC is a world leader in the provision of horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment. They are also committed for charity and community welfare projects and helps the govt. relief measures and they are one of the world's top 10 charity donors. In 2018-19 club's Charities Trust approved a total of 4.3 billion HK dollars as donations to 294 charity and community welfare projects.

Sha Tin race course originally built with capacity of 35,000 and one grand stand, it now has the capacity of 85,000 and two grand stands. Similarly Happy Valley accomodates apporoximately 55,000 spectators and horse racing is a big tourist attraction in HK. Due to covid pandemic presently spectators are not allowed at both the race courses . HKJC feature includes equine hospital, racing laboratory, equine swimming pool and riverside gallop and having different tracks like turf and all weather.  This coming sunday Sha Tin is conducting day races and the 11 race card framed starts with first race scheduled at 10 am IST.
Last wednesday on 10th June J Moreira bounce back with a much needed double at Happy Valley to narrow down the gap of wins to three and the tally for top position for wins stands  as on date is Z Purton leading with 129 wins, closely followed by J Moreira at 126 wins and further way behind is K Teetan on 77 wins and C Y Ho on 59 wins. J Moreira having rides in all 11 races and Z Purton riding in 7 races on this Sunday and again a competitive and exciting race card is in prospect to watch and enjoy.
