An Appeal To Race Course Officials To Decide Against Racing In 2020

By Smart-still-poor-punter | 12-Jun-2020

Hi Everyone,

It's high time that we come together and uphold the interests of our nation above everything, including horse racing. Today, India has taken the 4th position among countries reporting the maximum number of Covid-19 positive cases. Going by the present trends, it very much appears that we will soon take the top spot.

With migrant workers unable to settle in their homes across the country and the poor finding it hard to even have their daily meal, is it worth suggesting that racing should start soon? If horse owners, trainers and jockeys ask for that I can understand, but how punters, who are also vastly disturbed due to the developments since March, afford to give a similar call?

All of us are aware that more than 50% of the people who visit race courses to bet belong to average middle class. In the last three months, it is this category of people who have suffered the most, with a majority of them even losing their employment. In this condition, commencing races will only force them to arrange money in all possible ways, discarding their urgent family needs.

Race course officials, who are watching the situation with utmost care, have done well by not making any loose comment as far as resumption of races is concerned. In the commercial capital of Mumbai, 100 to 150 people are dropping dead daily, whereas in Chennai, the daily positive cases are slowly touching an incredible 2,000? How can the two most popular race courses of India, Mahalaxmi and Guindy, afford to even think of starting races in this precarious situation?

I am least bothered about the scourges who advocate resumption of races by hook or crook. I am quite worried about the overall situation which is very likely to get further vitiated if horses going to be allowed to run at this stage. I know there are enough number of 'donkeys' ready to come and witness horses run even during the height of pandemic.

My humble appeal, therefore, to the race course officials across the nation is to officially propose to the Centre not to resume racing at least till the end of this year (which is very likely even otherwise) and also think about any action in 2021 depending upon the then prevailing condition.

I know I will receive many brickbats for this post but I say this with real concern for my country, which is in a shambles economically and facing a future that is as unpredictable as horse racing itself. Thank you

If you dont want to go to Races and gamble, then stay put. You have been writing that you have incurred more losses and messed up everything. I can only sympathise with you.

But, it will be unwise, you go to the Court with a petition to ban Racing, because you incurred losses. As it is there is  no time for the Court to attend to the mountain of  cases they have with their handful.

By going to Court, you will be only wasting your time and energy. Sit at home and chant HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA and get peace of mind at the fag end of your life.

We on our part will  go to Bar and have a couple of shots, attend racing and gamble, so that after we die, our souls will Rest in Peace.

However, if you feel that covid 19 threat is simply media hype, and not to be taken seriously, and the turf clubs start racing, then ignore SSPP and indulge in betting.

Godzilla, and Reality,

"Those who gamble away 2 lakhs in a single day is a fool".

Well said.

I normally refer to such persons as greedy, lacking discretion etc.  Of course, I might have used the words "stupid" also.  But, generally I am of the opinion that the punter alone can decide how much to bet.  Nevertheless, I ask punters to bet low.

However, I would like to state one thing.  A punter who has lost heavily, that too betting lakhs in a day should blame only himself.   Such kind of punters will normally continue betting and lands in bigger trouble.  In this aspect, I appreciate SSPP as a man worth following.  He has quit race betting 6 years ago!

However, it would have been better if you had said that such punters are "big fools".  There are punters who bet 2 lakhs in a single race, and there are punters who bet and lose so much amount in 6 months.  Every body is fool only.  Some big fools, some bigger fools , some small fools, some smaller fools..and so on.

So a person who bets 1000/2000 etc in a race can never boast about his sharp wisdom.  He is punter only.  In no way his intellect is superor to those who bet lakhs.

Many people who are interacting in this site bet 1k, 2k, 5k or 10k per race.  And everybody is a loser.  At best, a punter can win in one bet out of three bets.

People are losing on a regular basis irrespective of denominations of their bets.  Among punters there may be some gifted individuals who might have a decent and guaranteed income and can absorb the loss sustained.  But, majority are losers who invariably get caught in a vicious debt trap and not knowing how to get out of that.

SSPP is advocating ban till the end of this calendar year.  Not at all a crazy request.  If racing is resumed in haste, the Government may end up wth situation which they may find it wholly impossible to handle.  The social distancing is the minimum care an individual is expected to observe.  And, in the race course it is absolutely impossible whether they conduct races at an interval of half an hour or one hour.

For your information, at BTC, the betting windows close immediately after the start of a race and will remain shut for the next 10 to 15 minutes.  This is happening race after race, day after day for several decades!  If the interval is one hour between the two races, then the windows will remain shut for 40 minutes.

On 10th March 2020, SSPP came with a suggestion that racing should stop in view of the covid-19 pandemic.  Several people laughed at him for giving such silly request.  Races were held on 11th & 12th March 2020.  The general public who were affected with covid-19 till that date was not even 100.  But, SSPP was proved right when the turf clubs closed shutters on 13th March 2020.  And such closure continues even now.

Now, SSPP is asking for stoppage of racing till the end of calendar year.  For many such suggestions may sound bad, even cruel.  But, whether such ban is imposed by Government or not, it is 100 times better for punters to maintain social distancing.  And avoid betting during next 6 months.

Covid 19 does not care about who you are.  In 5000 strong crowd, only 10 people may be affected.  It is better we do not take any chance.  No one can guarantee that you will not be one among those unfortunate 10.

Mr. Raghvan ,Yes for me racing is a matter of pride.

I do enjoy success in racing as thy in science, engg.

To have listener one has to have knowledge, ability to explain and proven system.

Somebody has rightly said on this forum that,'stop betting ,reduce betting, close raceclubs all these suggestions, advices etc. show THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANING THE GAME.                 I do not bother about anybody's thoughts, reply on my comment.

Your keeping names as crackpot to winners is spill the tea.

It stinks ur jealousy.

I m not interested in paying any heed to those who r failure.

Punters who are cautious while wagering need not to give any damn to anybody's warning.

And finally try to understand ABCD of racing then air ur socalled generous advices.

Mr. SSPP, I know how wealthy you are. First pay your debts and then brag about yourself.

We all know the seriousness of covid-19 but that doesn't mean we should stop discussing about resuming the sport.

Everyone on this forum is Indian patriot. So please don't try to show that only you care about India.

If I would've quit racing then I wouldn't have bothered about it at all. Grow up!

Anyone gambling around 2 lakhs in a single day is nothing but foolish. It also shows the persons greed to make money within a short span of time instead of waiting and playing smartly.

Such losers will always blame the Racing and recommend for a ban.  Losers should not have an impression that others do fall in the pit like him.

Sureshot,

Success in science, engineering, medicine etc are matter of pride and they will have more than the desired number of listeners.  Whereas the one who had success in race betting should search out for listeners of his heroics.

I do not think your sweeping statement that the winners will have boisterous listeners is right assessment of public behaviour.  In any case, it is only the crackpots who will shout that they are winners.

How many members in this site are boasting about their success.  Two?  or is it three?  I have ripped apart the so called two winners!

Whatever may be the calculations of the punters.  The coronavirus is at its furious bets in three cities.  Mumbai, Delhi & Ahmedabad.  So, absolutely no chance for races to resume at MUM & DEL during next 4 months.  And Mumbai & Delhi account for 80% of bets.

Very few people have the guts to admit their failure and warn other punters about the grave consequences of betting.  I ask thee punters to bet low.  People who are willing to take these warnings in right spirit will somehow survive.  I do not think there is any need for me to speak about those who indulge in rank indiscretion.

Voice of only successful peoples are heard on this planet.

Nobody will pay heed to looser and poor in any field leave racing alone.

By the grace of GOD racing in India will resume now or then.

Punters will enjoy gambling and winning .

Cheers.

I completely agree with Godzilla. Only, we the old, are wise and genuinely interested in the King of sports!Even after ecommending a handle change to SSPP, he continues to raise rabble.

Look at racing action acreoss he globe. If SSPP is the be believed, then racing at these centres would have ground to a halt.

Time in these difficult times erequires out of the box strategic over view. Like virtual racing. We are now in the tech world and thus it is complimentary that we conduct reacing in the virtual world and we must not be concerned that SSPP will shout himself hoarse!

Our problem is that goverment networking by the self appoiunted racing officuials is pathetic.^They are self centered people who have no feel for racing.

till this damned virus has peaked and there is a significant drop in mortality and fresh i9nfections, why cnt we move into the virtual world. Is it not a sad commetary that every one is loser?

In avoidable distess,

Venkat

Atleast from no racing he has come to end of 2020.Why because suddenly he has become a wealthy man!

Racing resumption will take place because   of many factors not on emotional appeals in the negative   just to be in the lime light  by one person.

There  cannot be time frame for the same.Lock down is not been extended [some states may do so].  So every one now realises we have to live with  the changed scene.

Regarding GST it is dead  issue .Imagine the govt has put frozen parotas on the GST list and some here are talking of reduction  on racing!  come on guys grow and accept it   grace fully.

In the end QUE QUE  serra sarra .what ever will be will be.Relax and enjoy the  present   living conditions

Would like you all to consider a few aspects

What about syces and their salary

Young trainers who are establishing themselves

What about horses fitness and tote employees who are dependent on this sport

Already big owners like thakurs, jhangiani, wadhwans etc have backed out

What is the future of racing

They say vaccine MAY be on the shelf in oct/nov - keeping that in mind and hoping it happens -racing should only be planned from november mumbai - it makes sense.  Horse Owners will need help with their maintenace bills - rent on horses should be waived off -Trainers should not take any fees .

It's true that I'm a wealthy man after giving up racing in 2014. However, I don't expect such a turn of fortunes in everyone's life and had also heard sad tales of many punters in many centres, which actually prompted me to start this 'quit racing' campaign a few years before. I stand vindicated, isn't it?

I also don't force anyone to don't bet. I am educated enough to realise that such calls will be laughed at in a place like race-course, where people take decisions on their own and surrender to fate. My earnest attempts are only to advocate what's in store for such people, who don't even have a proper earning to look after their families. With Corona's ongoing onslaught, my worries have only doubled.

Like I don't interfere in others works, I believe I can also ask others not to teach me whether to champion the cause of punters or not, isn't it? I am in fact planning to consult a quality Supreme Court lawyer to see if a review petition can be moved against the earlier order upholding continuance of horse racing in India.

India is a democratic country and all of us enjoy our fundamental rights. My right to expression shall not be suppressed by anyone, particularly those who keep running after horses, hoping to lay their hands on an unexisting treasure, please.

I have no sympathy for Racing Administrators,  but at least they did one good thing  -- they stopped racing just at the nick of time. Otherwise race courses would have become Carona spreaders and that would have stopped racing forever!

It is understandable why only degenerate punters are eagerly awaiting restarting of racing !. Club Administrators have taken no such initiative !! By not taking strict action against those who flouted medication rules, incalculable damage was done to punters. Inability to stop half tax betting was a sin that can not be excused. Having burnt the boat at both ends  they don't have the courage to request government help now. Do not make the mistake of comparing racing in India with racing abroad.

Raaghavan said ...

SSPP,

Let the Government decide on that issue after taking all things into consideration and after applying its mind.

Many punters have resigned to the prospect of no racing at least till November 2020.  We do not know when races will resume.  Of course BTC desires to have a truncated summer season from August.  But, BTC alone is not the deciding authority.  The Government has to agree and give the club license.

There are some anxious queries by the punters.  But, the Governmeent will not grant license just because there is a passionate appeal from the punters.

So, I feel that your request at this juncture is wholly superfluous.

At present Mumbai & Delhi are severely affected by the Covid-19.  So, forget about the races in immediate future.  Even Mumbai 2020-21 season is doubtul.

People are asking for early resumption of races.  Well.  They have a point.  A horse if allowed to idle for months together may lose its sharpness.  Jockeys may lose some efficiency.

Of course, the main reason as to why the punters is asking for resumption of races is betting.  That too betting with the bookies.  You have given many reasons as to why you are appealing with authorities to stop racing.  But, the punters are impatient and are in no mood to hear  such sermons by anyone.

There are many tote employees at BTC who are without job since march 13.  They also have wife, children.  The turf club has not given them even 1000/- assistance.  Poor chaps.  What they can do?  Friends/relatives may chip in with a small amount that may last for one week.  Even in normal course their existence is only from hand to mouth.  They can not get alternate employment.  So, let us not rub salt in their wounds.

The absense of racing may have helped the punters to a considerable extent;  but they want to bet.  In such circumstances let us leave it to the wisdom of the Government either to run races are stop that.  From our side, let us be tight lipped and not request the Government either to permit races or cancel races.

In the year 2009, Indian derby was conducted on 12.4.2009 due to health issues faced by the horses in Mumbai. As such we have no idea whether the COVID 19 has affected the Horses. After testing positive for COVID 19 many patients died within a few hours after admission. Still no clear cut information available about COVID. Assuming Horse racing in full progress, punters will be in total darkness about the well being of the horses backed by them. In the morning horse may not show signs of Corona positive.but if it suddenly develops and collapses during the running of the race, will the punters take it lightly, if the horse is a  raging favorite. You can forget Mumbai and Chennai racing. T.N govt has given an affidavit in the Madras High Court, that the covid19 will be very very serious during October and November. Mumbai may be much worse. Still, there is no guarantee Bengaluru and Hyderabad will be free from Covid19 in the near future. So many conflicting information doing the rounds, about the Pandemic.

when the racing is doubtful, many talking about closed-door racing, and online betting. Rash optimists.

Stud owner's worries are very serious. Already many of them running their horses under their colors. Look at the results of PBMM 2020. Except for the first three finishers, others surrendered at the starting gates itself. Look at the price of yearling, during the last Auction sales, which only super-rich can afford. When the racing is doubtful, how the medium level owners, will give full support for BTF.

Lastly, there will be no change in GST. If at all any change it will be raised to 35%. Did you not bear 5 np extra postage stamp, in support of Bangladesh Refugees. (during the 1970s)

So you can expect a natural death for racing in 2 or 3 years.

Under present pandemic situation, resumption of outdoor games and sports is in great  uncertainty all over the world. Respective administrative authorities of all games are trying  their best to get ready for  restarting activities as soon as situation permits. Hopefully Turf  Clubs  of India are no exception. They are also  trying  their  level best to resume  the sport  as soon as situation improves  and Government permission in this regard is obtained. But,to me the proposal of deferment of resumption of horse racing  in India for more than one year  because of deteriorating economic condition of common people and  because of the fact  that this particular sport involves in  legitimate  betting,  is unacceptable. In every part of India,a large number of common people do invest unimaginable amount of money in a roll  of a dice,or distribution of a pack of cards. Keeping a lumpsum margin money at stake, common people get involved in very short term deals in equity shares and FOREX. These activities haven't been discontinued and will never be. In comparison to number of common people involved in above such activities, number of common people involved in betting in horse racing is very small. As always,a punter must restrict himself according to his financial  capacity.

Having stopped racing for several years now, I would like o believe your fortunes would have increased significantly. Thus, you are no longer a poor punter-- need to change the handle. Recommended: Smart and wealthy ex punter!

you have o acknowledge that racing is the King of sports and a great many of us miss the action. Secondly, if racing does not commence soon a lot of people associaterd with the sport in many ways, both diect and indirec are being affected seriously and would very soon reach starvation and loseenormous dignity. No one in a free country should be deprived of life and liberty.

Undoubtedly, the virus pandemic is a cause of enormous worry. However, by holding races behind closed doors will not add fuel to the fire. You are being presumptios when you state that a lot of middle class punters, who according to you are largest among the punting class will borrow money o wager. In my view each one for himself or hersely. This kind of misplaced activism is seriously flawed as it insults a person's abilty to play out his or her destiny. I recommend you stop being the champion of the 'hapless' punter!

Racing is a huge spectator sport. If for the time being, live streaming can also be commenced at a modest cost, I do not see one good reason why the sport does not commence.

Best

The government and race clubs are the deciding authorities regarding resumption of horse racing. For government it is not the question of resumption of horse racing alone. All sports activities are at standstill since march  second week and so also number of functioning of important offices and functioning of business activities including  hotel, travels, tourism,  transport, temples,  and education institutions etc., etc. are partially or fully closed.  Corona pandemic forced everyone to rethink about fresh parameters to start all such  sports and business activities which can not remain closed for such  a long time. This is the reason e commerce activities and online feasibility of every sport and business activity is being worked out and under serious consideration and concerned officials and authorities are working day and night to come up with new plans and strategies with some restrictions and new guidelines. Individually we may favour or against restart of any particular sport or business activity but for government it is not the question whether racing will start soon or late.  Govt. will have to take extra care and measures for safety of lives and survival of economy, so government is bothered for everyone.

We are already lagging much behind as far as use of technology is concerned and slowly gaining momentum to come par with others. As stated by me in first para itself many big ones of private and public sectors are more concerned and they are the decision makers and they are in regular touch of each other to sort out these problems and they are the only ones to take a final decision keeping the eye on present situation of the world and keeping the interest of one and all of our country in mind.
We are giving suggestions from ourside  time to time as per our needs and suitability but we have to trust the concerned authorities and wait and watch for their decision, plans and action on ground  to overcome all these problems. Despite covid '19 pandemic many countries running their business and sports  activities in partial with restrictions and new guidelines and upto a great extent they are very successful. We can also follow them and take out whatever is best and suitable to us and our country.
During past few months crores of rupees spent on corona medicines and vaccines and many researchs  are in final stages  and hopefully this will also result in good and good positive news may come any time. Till than stay at home and stay safe and take good care of yourself and your family members. God bless you all.
