Golden Period Of Horse Racing In India

By Anoasku | 24-Jun-2020

Hi friends,

I started my punting at BTC in early 90, when most of the races were run on merit and some astute jockeys like Vasant Shinde, Aslam Khader, Pesi shroff and MAM brigade led by Robin corner, many legends like Lestor Piggot used to visit India for some of their commitments.

And trainers brigade led by the legendary R R Byramji, Jim Foley and younger lot of I A Sait, Dallas Todywala and many more.Even apprentice like C.Rajendra, Baria S S and many more whom I remember have graced the field,

Though my winning percentage was less, I beleive 1990 to 2000 was the golden period for Indian racing, unlike recent years where most outsiders have ruled the roost. Whenever I have won I used to recover substantial losses of mine, Most of the races were won by 1st or 2nd favourites, and I have seen punters enjoy the racing even when they lose when run on merit.

Looking at the exorbitant taxes and surge in petrol and diesel prices, I don't think that the Government will consider reducing GST on horse racing, as it is called sin tax, to me racing future looks bleak barring any miracles. Online betting may or may not succeed, but cannot bring back the glory or the joy it used to bring while you are at the racecourse.

So I hope to meet all the punters in future if at all the racing begins,.Till then bye bye if not Good bye.

The bygone era of MAM from 1996 when he first won the Indian derby on AMAZING BAY in his own famed colours of gold and brown.he dominated every classic that was run in india dwarfing other big owners.his strike rate was best from then on till he breathed his last in Dec 2015 winning the Indian derby with BE SAFE the same year.the combination of jockey B.PRAKASH with trainer GANAPATHY was the best, myself and other punters of that period were able to rake in the moolah, courtesy MAM.

Dear IIMBLUE, I too remember how graded races were fought between MAM, D khaitan family and vijaya mallya. Even newspapers used to publish "it"s MAM vs Vijaya Mallya or something like that. Really it's worth remembering.

Dear Racing joker, I agree with you on that, nobody lost any penny during this pandemic.

Dear Biswanathji, it is beyond human control to predict any racing activity this year, we can just wish that is all

All of us have our own Golden Ages and usually they are of period early in our racing careers. They say distance leads enchantment. So everyone is entitled to his or her own Golden Age.

But if Golden Age is to be decided by number of favourites winning, the facts tell different story. There is not significant change. In recently concluded winter season which ended prematurely 1166 races were and 455 favourites won. That is average of 39.22 %.

Sometime back Glasgow Prince had wanted some statistics and what I had then worked was for few Mumbai winter seasons:-

     1973-74 - 38.72 %

      1993-94 - 41.06 %

     2013-14 -  42.24 %

      2019-20 -  42.70 %

Recent Ascot five days meeting had favourites percentage of only 25 %. Hong Kong % of winning favourites is also lower.

What has definitely happened of late in India is dividends on winning favourites are very less on Tote. In Queen Anne Stakes, Gr.1 at Ascot winning favourite was 4/1 on books and 11/4 on Tote.

For me,  the golden period was when three great owners -- VM, MAM and Deepak Khaitan fought tooth and nail for every major trophy all over. In addition there were many sportive owners who loved their horses.

BTC tote  counters were great during this time .Punters from  Hyderabad and Chennai used to visit BTC,  just to bet at the tote. So much so that,  even bookmakers placed their coverbets at the Tote.

At that time  , I was under the impression that nothing will stop racing,  unless there is a law and order problem. The betting tax was the monopoly of the State government. GST changed the picture overnight. The Central Government has shown that it can kill the racing industry slowly and surely with this tax weapon.

From Punter's point of view, the last three months are defnitely the Gloden Period of Horse Racing. None of the poor punters have lost any money in this period to the preying Jackals aka Bookies.
