Back to listsInvestec Oaks-- July 4. An Oaks With Love.
By Venkat | 03-Jul-2020Epsom certainly provides the ultimate test, with an undulating, stamina-sapping course comprising deceptive cambers and a challenging decent into Tattenham Corner. Fillies taking part usually appear in one or more trial races before the Investec Oaks. This year there has been no barrier trials. Howver, Love won the qipco 100 guineas(in taking style) and Franly Darling won at royal ascot.
The ladies take centre stage off the course as well, with the race being staged on ‘Ladies Day’, when colourful hats and dresses are very much in evidence. The Investec Oaks was established in 1779, one year before the Derby, and was named after a house near Epsom, leased by the 12th Earl of Derby and who had invited guests to one of his grand parties and race their horses. Unfortunately, this running will behind closed doors and probably takes much of he sheeen. Nonetheless, it generates much excitement among thoroughbred racing lovers!
According to me, there are only 2 major contenders in this running. Love ( to be ridden by Ryan Moore) and Frankly Darling( to be ridden by the wily Dettori).
Love won over a mile and spendidly in the 1000.If she stays, she wil win this easily. Quoted at even money, I think it is poor odds for a filly traversing 2400 mtrs or anywhere near for the 1st time.Franky Darling won brilliantly at Royal Ascot over a longer distance! Partnered by the brilliant Detorri she is quoted somewhere between 5/2-- 9/4!. To fill the frame(of 3), I fancy Gold Wand( Jockey Atzeni astride). 8 Have been declar4ed to start.
Thus my choice-- Love; Frankly Darling; & Gold Wand.
Current leading jockey: Frankie Dettori, 5 wins (1994, 1995, 2002, 2017, 2019)
Current leading trainer Aidan O’Brien, 7 wins (1998, 2001, 2006, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2018).
May the best filly win!
