Is It Possible To Make A Profit By Playing Only At The Totalizator?

By Race-goer | 05-Jul-2020

As per my experiences, it is very, very difficult to make money at the races, particularly at the totalizator because of the 30% or 40% pre-race deductions (GST plus Club Commission). Therefore before the race has even started the punters have lost 30% or 40% of their investments. As per my calculations (I play mainly at the totalizator) I must have lost about one lakh rupees in the last 10 years - (10000 rupees per year)  or Rs 50 per day (by averaging) - given that I used to attend the races 4 times per week or 200 days in a year. However, if the 30% or 40% had not been deducted I would have been plus by several lakhs of rupees !

@ PDS  ,

I doubt  if your idea of Whole Country Pool with reduced GST and reasonable Club Commission will materialise  !

Just for argument sake,   let us say BTC comes out with an app for online betting ,  it will be the sole custodian of the collected amount ,irrespective of the place of betting. Thus BTC will be the custodian for the all India pool, as long as the race is held in Bangalore and the betting is on its App.

Similarly other Clubs may come up with their own Apps. Thus there will be several All India Pools with each Club owning one pool.

Better off Clubs will be reluctant to share their booty with  others.

I will be happy,  if my understanding is wrong.

IIMBLUE,

Totes were paying much higher than bookies from 1992 onwards.  I remeber one bet.  That was quoted at 4/1, and 80/100 for place.

I purchased 40 tickets for place for 200/-.  That horse placed.  Tote paid 13/- for win. I got 520/-.  With bookies, for 160 place bet plus 40 tax, I would have got less than 300.

Earlier to that I also was also betting with bookies only.

Just for your information,  Post GST days, no doubt the bookies are giving good odds and the tote payout is around 60% to 70% of what bookies pay.  I have stopped betting for win/place after GST was implemented.  But, once in a while, the tote payouts beat bookies payout fair and square..

Jack Flash & Antarctica.  On 26/2/2019.  Both won at odds of 15/1.  I do not know how many have played those two horses with bookies.  Tote paid 829/- and 281/- respectively at BNG tote.  A 300/- roll would have fetched little less than 7 lakhs.

Friends, so far the collection on tote has been very low as it used to be independent raceing cente wise, hence the low payouts. Now as the things are shaping up and on line betting is likely to start, the whole country pool will become one pool and with reasonable taxes by the government and lower club deductions the dividends will be very good no doubt. lets hope on line betting starts through out the Country, it will also be very good for Indian Horse Racing. Good luck, its only a question of few months now.

In some places like Chennai and Ooty,  there is no point in touching the tote because the collections and payments are so miniscule. I will confine myself to BTC tote.

1997--2017 was the golden period in the tote history. Every race BTC tote used to collect rs 1 crore on Win,  SHP and Place alone. The tote turnover was nearly rs 2000 crore per year. Punters would lap up anything and everything. Even if a horse paid rs 15 for place on a rs 10000 bet , you got rs 5000 net,  not a bad thing at all. If you caught an outsider,  well,  the odds were better than anything the bookies could offer. When Exacta pool was introduced,  the jackpot was all but forgotten. Afterall,  who has the patience to wait for 5 races,  when  you have an opportunity to get a jackpot like payment every race!

Yes,  it was possible to make money playing ONLY on the tote during this period 1997--2017.It looked so easy.

Coming my personal experience,  I missed the bus. Having pathological hatred for favourites  , I avoided all races where favourites looked like winning. My record with outsiders was pretty decent but I could not encash on them. They seemed to click only when I played small amounts. Being statistically inclined I might have designed hundreds of methods where my box of investments in a particular race should give a fixed return irrespective of the outcome. All methods worked only for a short term. It seemed racing was always getting ahead me. Ultimately,  more than money,  it became an obsession for me to crack this racing puzzle. I am grateful to racing because it helped me solve many other puzzles in my professional life.

To sum up. With GST,  it is not possible to survive on tote alone,  even at BTC. It is a hard reality Risk - Reward ratio is unfavorable.

Race goer,

Only one lakh in ten years of betting!  A big salute to you.  You have mastered the art of cutting losses.  And, those who cut the loss are really winners.

Loss of 10,000/- per year!  Excellent.  I have paid much higher amount as entrance fees.  At BNG, the entrance fee is Rs. 50/-.

Can one make money in tote.  In this regard, I can only say that people have won money by betting at tote.  At Bangalore, there is a pool called exacta where you have to pick top four finishers in right order.  There are payouts in excess of 1 lakh too many times.  Cost of ticket just 10/-.  Similarly there is jackpot pool.  Even in this GST era, we have seen many payouts more than 2 lakhs.  And  there is less rewarding trinella, forecast etc.

So when Krishna, Rama, Ali etc have taken home a decent payouts, why not race goer?  But, you were in business for about 10 years.  Whereas I have narrated the bright prospect of winning big, I need not tell you what the ground reality is.

You are safe as long as you do not try big bets that too with bookies.

Without taxes, I would have been in profit!  That is the  grievance, complaint by every punter.  My best wishes to you.  We should not be blaming the horses when Club or Government snatches a big big share of our profit.

People tend to calculate taxes and returns while placing a bet Which leads them to wager on a wrong horse most of the times. I recommend to play horse that you think will win without calculating how much money you will get back if that horse wins.. Unless of course it is a money back favourite..
