S R Padmanabhan — Man Who Believed Himself And In His Talent

By S C Sharma | 21-Jul-2020

Roy T Bennet quoted once " If you have a strong purpose in life, you don't have to be pushed. Your passion will drive you there".  This is a fit quote as far as trainer Sadakshara Reuben Padmanabhan is concerned. He didn't have any racing background as his father was an ex-serviceman and his family always opposed his racing but Padmanabhan said 'horse's always fascinated me. I use to ride as an amateur and that is how I attracted to racing.

First time in 1981 he  tried his luck from Madras Race Club and got trainers licence and within a month got first winner on Don't Worry . During his first season as a trainer he got only two wins. Later in 1982 he shifted his base to Bangaluru and from then never looked back. After R R Byramji who won 12 invitational races Padmanabhan is the second highest trainer  to win 5 invitational races starting first in 1999 with Running Flame at Mumbai, Zubaran  in 2003 at Hyderabad, Becket in 2010 at Mumbai, In The Spotlight in 2012  at Bangaluru and last fifth one Desert God in 2016 at Chennai.  Apart from top Indian ace jockeys Padmanabhan always engaged many top foreign riders for his stable and prominent among them are R Huges, M Dwyer and David Allan. He won more than 20 derby races  all over India and was the first trainer to send his horses abroad for racing including USA and Dubai.

His first classic winner was on Golden Fantasy who won Mysore 1000 guineas a grade -2 race in 1991 and first major win was in 1995 when Winning Pretty won Poonawalla Breeders Million at Mumbai owned by the late Bollywood star and great horse lover Feroz Khan. From than he won many classic and graded races including Colts  and Fillies trial, 1000 and 2000 guineas races, St lzs and Oaks and  saddled 1000 winner in 2017.
Padmanabhan known and called as Paddu with love and respect,  always focused on big races, sacrifing  numbers while attempting difficult targets. He often called a magic touch trainer with optimum results. His secret of success was he foresee the subtle changes in horses behaviour minutely , if they exhibits signs of discomfort , he make life comfortable  for them and then again start working on them.
Padmanabhan's another speciality is he is known for minimum entries and maximum wins. For Paddu breeding and training horses is a scientific process. He believes in working with integrity and sincerity and never believes in numbers even if they were to help in the economics of stable management. He always been choosy about horses, he picks and since he is gifted with an ability to spot  a potential  champion, he has tremendous success with limited numbers of horses at his disposal. He select good and above average jockeys to deliver best possible results . Sir Cecil was also best horse trained by him but suffered minor setbacks before invitational race and lost his unbeaten record only in his nineth attempt after winning eight races in a row and remaining unbeaten till than.  After R R Byramji he rated best trainers of India. Desert God his highest stake money earner horse was bred by him. He always aimed to buy a good pedigreed horse even if it meant scarifying a few horses to get one.
Last year he suffered some health problems but still seen at races and at stables.  He always try to devote as much time as possible at races and at stables and with owners. May God give him good health and many more years of racing with tons of good luck and duwaas.

Trust you will not mind my pointing out that Dynamic Dancer was ridden by S. Marshall in the Deccan Derby and by C. Rutter in the Golconda Derby.

During late 70's and early 80's there was a jockey named Karan Singh. He had a habit of coming from behind and piping the horse on the post. He never comes in front, he will accelerate in the last 100 meters and will get the photo finish verdict in his favour. He has more than 1000 winners to his credit.

If you play his horse, your heart will be in your mouth.

One has to admire the way Padmanabhan strives for excellence. He always tries to enter his horses in graded races and classic races. His horses travel very well too.

Major Sab once pointed out that ,  In The Spotlight was the most travelled horse  in history before she entered the paddock for Indian Derby. The way she won the Derby was a tribute to the methods adopted by Padmanabhan.

DYNAMIC DANCER  Jockey Pat Eddrey extracted a giant Leap from the horse on the post to win, I Never seen a jockey do that and the horse response that way.

According to me, Paddy's greatest achiement was the way In the Spotlight recovered from a life threatening illness! No doubt his wife was the senior partner in this miracle, however, there is no taking away the credit from Payy. His enormous love for this wonderful filly/noiw mare, ensured the recovery. And we all knoiw how she decimated her opponents. I recall the derby in Calcutta. Dandified was the favourite that day and I was also blessed to be able to place a neat packet on her at 4 3/4! And she decimated the field! Those days, there was no TV transmission or if there was, I did not get to seel her. Relied on the commentary and it was pretty good. In the Indian Derby too, Jockey Martin Dwyer had very little to do except make sure she met no interference and that he did not fall off!

No doubt that Paddy is the next best to RR Byramji. I did not know that his middle name is Rueben. Many thanks for this tid bit.

Cheers

@ Cruise -B'lore :  You are correct about Dynamic Dancer win but before that his first classic winner was Golden Fantasy which won Mysore 1000 guineas in 1991 and the same was mentioned by me. Padmanabhan's derby winning horses  list was long,  so I simply mentioned he won more than 20 derby races all over India.  Still as pointed by you,  I would have have mentioned about DD.  His horses paddock looks always attracts punters more, as he maintains the horses in good and very fit  condition .

Padmanabhan is a very talented trainer. According to me Rashid Byramj,  Pessi Shroff and Padmanabhan are my top three favorite trainers.

Hello SC Sharma,

The first major classic success was with DYNAMIC DANCER, who won the Deccan derby in 1992 monsoon season and the Golconda derby during winter season.

He is a wonderful trainer who crafted carreer with hard work. I am totally unlucky with class one trainers every time. But very few times won on Paddy's wards who won on longer odds.

Kia ora ridden by MJ Azad given me 15 to 1 for win at Bangalore.

A grey horse name forgets won on 2000 m with 1200 plus at Bangalore winter are two good bets won. Most of the time his wards are in first four and I omit it.

One very ordinary horse who turned to be a fine sprinter is gralemour most of the time piloted by S.Rajesh.

The best day which I remember is sprinters and stayers won by Padmanabhan, Lyrical bid and moment of glory( on this horse I never lost any bets)
