No Certainty In Racing

By Aravind | 22-Jul-2020

This is ofcourse just time passing in these No Racing days.  Lot of subjects, stories discussed in this forum last three months. I would like to tell a direct fight between owners to claim coveted trophies.

Long years back S Rangarajan had bought one good horse(pl forgive me coz I forget the name of the horse) it won two races as 2/3 yrs old in Madras before coming to Ooty. In Nilgiris Derby it was tipped as hot favourite. Previous day we around Five freinds collected money (2000k- those days it s big for us) to play S Rangarajan horse. But on Derby day morning it's reported that Horse was withdrawn. There was big article in The Hindu next day explaining public that some substance was found in Horse Stable water Bucket, which trainer, owner thought that Horse has sipped water. Hence they didn't want to take any chance and withdrawn. Owner claim it's hood winked by opposite stable to deny him the Derby Cup. But opposite party (in this case MAM stable denied any wrong doing) there was police complaint lodged, but that incident gone to dustbin. Incidentally The Nilgiris Derby won by Dr.MAM horse.

After few decades Dr.MAM stable witnessed Besafe a certainty to lift Nvitation cup  lost to Quasar. I m not saying tit for Tat. Just recalling these incidents happening in Racing.

Honorable members can write any such incidents they witnessed in their life time in Racing.

If anybody could give a result of a race wherein the cousins Yash and Suraj faught till the winning post and the younger Yash won other than Quasar.  You can see in several races the younger cousin will not even go for place  where his older cousin is also riding even if his horse had merit. It is all decided in advance as it is family business. Even other jockeys related to them will not ride against the Narredus. Whether Be Safe would have won any race after invitation is not the point here but Be Safe had no business to loose Invitation.

Why Be Safe was kept so back in the field and how Quasar could hit the front turning for home. Both ran in contrasting style to their usual running styles. If both were from different stables,it is understandable but from the same stable it is all predetermined. But knowing the family knowledgeable race goers surely say it was not racing uncertainty.

One more story though I m it involved. My freind Sunder-( he's no more, died young) his father's freind had some horses in Madras long back. The owner engaged a visiting foreign jocky in one of his horse. They had a meeting at a hotel previous day and Sunder's father arranged some money to play next day. It was quoted at 5-1 at race time. Insiders who knows this sure shot played emptying their pockets. Horse didn't came in board. Ppls played this horse shocked. This fellow went near unsaddling and asked jockey what happened, foreign jockey replied that this is not Horse this s Donkey. I wipped thousand times still it didn't responed. Give this horse to training school. Only then these ppls realised the capacity of that Trainer. Sunder father also died. His uncle still coming to Madras Race course.

When Late Rangarajan was at the helm of affairs  , The Hindu  carried immense value to the punters. Track  of most of the race courses was published without fail and it is true that no one read the track the way The Hindu did. In the Saturday Sports supplement  , two full pages were devoted exclusively for racing and the reviews carried hints to future happenings. Punters could  benefit a great deal  by taking these comments seriously.

Regarding Brave Dancer  , The Hindu used to say,  " Steffi Graph " may get beaten  but Brave Dancer will not be beaten " .Brave Dancer stayed true to the comment for a pretty long time. When he retired  , he was the horse that won highest stake money in India.

There was another filly Happy Diamonds with Uttam Singh. She made her debut late --at age 4. The Hindu 's comment was  , "We can not expect Happy Diamonds  to run everyday. But she should be backed whenever sighted ". If I remember right Happy Diamonds won 4 or 5 times straight and at good odds ranging from  3/1 to 5/1.

The way racing was being conducted at Chennai and Ooty  , made Rangarajan very unhappy and he stopped publishing the race card of these centers. Of course this did not deter MAM one bit.

It is another matter that The Hindu stopped giving prime space to racing matters after Rangarajan 's time was over. No doubt a great loss to punters. Whenever I used to visit Pune,  I used to see punters striving hard to get hold a copy of The Hindu,  which arrived late here.

Love trevor.

Bangaloreans have some sort of affection, admiration to Be safe.

Quasar may well be the deserving winner in Invitation cup.  But, at least for Bangaloreans,  (& I believe that for punters in other centers too)  on that day, it was futile to look at any horse other than Be Safe.  And, Quasar was the 4th favorite quoted at 25/1.

Quasar has beaten Be Safe subsequently also.  So, your point is correct.  After its Invitation cup loss, Be safe finished a pathetic 4th in one race.

The public mood was in favor of Be Safe in that Invitation cup race.  Of course, as mentioned in the heading of the topic, the only certainty in races is uncertainty.

Yes i believe that quasar has won with his winning ability not from gambling such people at that time they talking about how besafe will loose the race but i believe that yash has ridden nicely and besafe has responded late that why suraj was loss that race i strongly beleive that quasar has won

10 yrs back and before , racing was much better because there were powerful owners who had total say with their trainers and they cared about their reputation so more often they cut a straight path only sometimes pulled a fast one on the punters ...now with their exit ,Trainers call the shots they have become to powerful, untouchable,Trainers Powerful means Racing Powerless..

Trainers have long list of excuses to give when they are called for 'winning or losing'  Look if you take action more then half the trainers and jockeys will be banned at any given time - The show must go on - The connected who are in the loop will make money and the extremely smart punter who has learned the ropes after a long struggle ..I said earlier even if you select the best horse to win you might still end up losing in that race for various reason ..imagine what happens when you don't select the best horse you ..lose again-  its like passing all the google interview to be a overall winner.

Indian racing half the time 40% approx is scripted the other 40% trainer makes it tricky, fools the handicapper - 20% a good handicapper will get it right ...So to win you have to know the intricate details of how races are conducted.

@ Arvind : If that was true, it only goes to show how low even professionals can stoop to achieve success. However, SR & MAM became very close friends later as I had spoken to both of them on a few occasions as a racing journo. When I was living in Chennai during early '90s, one jockey from Nepal, who was residing near to me and doing duty for a leading stable, used to 'open up' when I keep pestering him for some 'inside' information. On one such occasion, he revealed that most of the riders, including himself, will be told in advance - but only minutes before the start of the race - how and where they should finish. I used to feel sad the way the affairs were being 'stage-managed'. It also began becoming very clear to me why punters were always on the losing side. But where to go and complain without material evidence?

It's Kalamaris. Mr. S. R. Rangarajan isn't the owner. Trainer J. S. Dhariwal. After two years it went on to win sprinters cup at Bangalore ridden by jockey V. Rajasekhar

 @ Arvind  ,

I think the horse in question is Kalamaris. After this  incident  , outstation horses stopped coming to Ooty  for Classics. It became purely MAM affair subsequently. And always MAM s doosras and teesras won Ooty Derby.

If my memory serves me right,  Kalamaris was a confirmed miler. He was trained by J. Dharwal. I remember he won Sprinters Cup at Bangalore to the surprise of everyone. The odds were 100/1 and Jockey Rajashekar rode him. The market rage was Mumbai horse Sweeter Than Honey. The horse was trained by N. Khalil. Jockey Hanut Singh took him on a start to finish mission but faltered in the last 10 meters. Trainer Khalil took it badly. He passed away soon thereafter.
