Racing Loses Its Most Devoted And Loyal Cognoscente

By Cruise_b'lore | 13-Aug-2020

Hello folks,

Indian racing loses its most dedicated patron - Mrs. Shelagh Foster. I use the word 'most' because I am yet to see or meet a person more devoted to horses than late Shelagh Foster.

I have a few interactions with her and we hit off well since we had a common cause - Passion for Horses and Racing.

I recall of her as being very proud of the mare Nicolina. Her face would literally be lit up when spoke fondly of the mare. It was akin to a proud mother recapitulating about the glorious achievements of her offspring.

She was not exactly a very social person. She was rather selective in that way but one way to make her open up was to just mention the word Horse. That was the magic word to get her going. She did mention once that she was done in by a well-known breeder. The incident pertains to a well-performed mare that had been sent to the said "gentleman's" stud farm for crossing but wasn't returned back. That was only negative statement ever that she made in out interactions.

I shall cherish all the conversations that I have had with her.

May the Lord bless her loving soul and her 'neighing' happily forever!

P.S. It would be doing great injustice if no mention is made of Mrs Roslyn Craig-Jones. She ought to be praised for providing the loving care that an elderly person craves. She did so selflessly that I dare say that even one's own would never match. She was like the 'Rock of Gibraltar' for Mrs Foster in her advanced years, God bless her too for being around her like a devoted daughter.

regds,
Cruise

RIP Foster Madam.

I witnessed Byrely Brigade ran in Ooty and it won the race but by an objection it was reversed.

Call it what you like -- a dream, a cherished ambition or a fond hope -- but it is the ultimate aspiration of anyone who breeds or raises Thouroughbreds in India to win the Indian Derby.

In a span of 25 years, Byerly Stud, established by the Fosters, bred 13 Classic winners of 35 Classics including Derby winners Om-Sakthi, Half A Crown, Red Chieftan, Nicolette, Byerly Brigade and Recommender. But an Indian Classic, and especially the Indian Derby, did not go its way.

It may not be generally known that Hotstepper, who won 2008 Indian Derby, was born at Kehelan Stud but raised at the erstwhile Lumbini Stud. Contrary to a general erroneous impression, Hotstepper went straight into trainer S.S. Shah's yard from Lumbini. The Lumbini Stud operation was then overseen by the late Mrs Shelagh Foster so the victory of the son of Glory of Dancer must have given that gracious lady much satisfaction. RIP.

One of the founders of  theLumbini Stud was the late Mr. R.M. Reddy. Mr. R.M. Reddy belonged that star galaxy of the old alumni of Shri Shivaji Military Preparatory School, Pune which provided Indian racing with a host efficeint and fondly remembered racing officials and the legendary trainer R.R. Byramji. Mr. R.M. Reddy served in the Cavalry and held various posts at R.C.T.C. before establishing Lumbini Stud on the outskirts of Bangalore. For an Indian Derby winner to have been raised in the Lumbini Paddocks that he laid out from scratch would have filled his cup to the brim. R.I.P.
