Vasant Shinde — Most Naturally Gifted And Complete Jockey

By S C Sharma | 27-Aug-2020

The Indian derby in horse racing is  — what Wimbledon is to tennis, richness, tradition, ambiance and the highest and best take part, mega lifestyle event is one of the Mumbai’s social landmark events with a record crowd. A heritage race having been run since 1943 and has a great tradition. The first Indian derby in 1943 was won by a filly named Princess Beautiful owned by Maharajah of  Baroda and ridden by Australian jockey Edgar Britt. The filly was trained by M C Patel.

It is the lifetime ambition of every jockey, trainer and owner to win this prestigious race. It is like conquering the Everest. Even a owner like late MAM Ramaswamy had to wait for well for two decades to get a Indian derby winner in his own colour on Amazing Bay in 1996 ridden by Satish Narredu and trained by J H Foley. No derby matches the glamour, glitz and enchantment of Indian derby.

It became a tradition for trainer and owners to invite foreign jockeys for this most prestigious derby event but Kheem Singh became the first Indian jockey to break this tradition and monopoly, when he won this race on a colt named Balam in 1949 trained by A L J Talib.  Than in 1970’s and after that  M Jagdish ( won 2 before and 2 after 70’s ), than Vasant Shinde, Aslam Kader and P Shroff came in picture and they too started outshining foreign riders and combination of all above four jockeys won as many as 17 Indian derbies.  After independence total 73 Indian derbies held  from 1948 to 2020 and out of which  Indian jockeys won 39  and 34 won by foreign jockeys.

I submit a list of Indian and foreign jockeys who won this derby from 1948 to till date. The number in brackets denotes the number of Indian derby wins.

W A Rickaby (2), Kheem Singh, Pandu Khade (4), B T Duffy, K A Gethin, W T Evans, S Chavan, E Eldin, J Egan, M Jagdish (4), J McGaffin, S Smith (2), W H Carr, F Durr, K Raghunath, E J Cracknell,  B Taylor, J Wilson, G McGrath, W Swinburn (2), N Reuben, E Johnson, Vasant Shinde (2), Karl Umrigar, A Barclay, G Baxter, P Shroff (8), Aslam Kader (3), Satish Narredu, M Narredu, J Fortune (2), C Ruzzan, R Hughes (2), B Prakash (2), P Belose, P Kamlesh, Colm O’ Donoghue, M J Kinane (3), , L Marshall, S A De Sousa, David Allan (3), M Dwyer, Y S Srinath, C S Jodha and Suraj Narredu (3). ( P Shroff won record number of 8 Indian derbies defeating top Indian and foreign jockeys and he attained a world class stature).

VASANT SHINDE RATED AS BEST IN THE SADDLE:

But the fact is despite witnessing so many good jockeys ( Indian and foreign ) Indian horse racing cannot forget its best ever and most complete jockey Vasant Shinde. Those who saw his riding  ( both Indian and foreign jockeys ) appreciated him openly as the best they ever saw in the saddle.

Vasant Shinde rated as the legendary champion jockey, one of the greatest and most naturally gifted champion rider. On present racing, once he commented in media chat that — “the quality  of racing is not the same. We don’t have that class of riding any more.  In our time jockeys were more dedicated and sincere on track work and use to spend more time with trainers and owners at stable to understand the horses.” He points that the understanding and rapport between jockeys, trainers and owners was far better during his era.

BYRAMJI AND VASANT SHINDE :

R R Byramji, the all time great training icon and racing legend was the first one to offer retainer-ship to Vasant Shinde when in early 70’s he rode his first ever winner. There were his only two wins when Rashid engaged him to ride Mr.  D K Das’s “King’s Hussar”  in mid-February of 1972.  As I read in media Vasant Shinde’s first win at Mumbai was ‘Royal Touch’.  From there he never looked back and crossed more than 1800 wins, including more than 110 classics. If health and knee injuries would not have effected on his riding,  he would have been the first Indian jockey to cross 2000 wins in Indian racing history. Now B Prakash and Suraj Narredu are ahead to his wins tally.  VS quit racing in 1994. ( some unconfirmed reports in media quotes he rode upto march, ‘96 ).

R R Byramji remembers VS with particular affection. “ There were so many races when I knew for a fact that the horse stood no chance but then there was Vasant Shinde in the saddle and some how  he knew how to get the best out of his runners.”   In 1977-78 at Bangaluru, trainer’s championship was a close run affair between Rashid Byramji and Zareer  Darashah and both tied, as were the Jockeys — Shinde and Umrigar, down to last race of the season. As Shinde was given a leg-up on “Fork Lightning” a cocky Shinde told Rashid Byramji “ Baba, don’t worry, we are champions “ and Fork Lightning won end to end.

Rashid recollects many such memories of Shinde - on another occasion a english tutor,  a lady hired to teach english to VS . She commented “ it is impossible for me to teach that man english, because the only things he speaks about horses and racing.”

ANIMALS ARE FAITHFUL AND LOYAL:

According to Vasant Shinde “ horses are God’s gift to mankind. They may not talk to you but they understand exactly what you need for them. “  I as a owner and having some  experience in racing field, would like to add  further - We  (owners) have to understand the nature of horses and talk to them, while visiting stables, sometimes pat them on their neck or back and offer some  carrot pieces which they like very much and give them with love. Animals are faithful and loyal. They know the love and affection of their bosses, who cares them well.

HORSE - POWER:

I was told a unique speciality about horses that they  remain standing for whole of their life and very rare they sits or lay down on ground like other animals and they never put their foot on any object, instead they prefer to jump but some times in running of the race and in some racing incidents it not happened, may be due to unknowingly or unwillingly, while in full of running rythem.  For this inherent and born gifted quality of horses, their power known as horse - power and  they loved and respected all over the world.

VASANT SHINDE’S STORY OF STRUGGLE TO RISE :

The early days of Vasant Shinde were nothing but a struggle. He grew up riding his fathers horses in Matheran. He use to take tourists on pleasure ride. After a few odd jobs he tried his luck on the advice of Captain Soli  as a rider in Pune Gymkhana races and very first year he won five races and bagged the best jockey award. Than he joined course at apprentice jockeys school at Pune. Vasant Shinde’s first notable winner with Byramji was I think ‘Round Off’ when he won Bangaluru St. leger a Gr. 3 race in March, 1976 and last  one, major notable winner with Byramji was ‘Astronomic’ winner of Bangaluru St. leger again a Gr. 3 race in July, 1993. He was lucky to have riding tips, guidance from a racing legend like Byramji and his blessings.  Byramji honed the technique and skills of riding to many top jockeys but his relation with VS was something special and different. Their chemistry worked extraordinarily well  and VS won about 80 percent  of his classic races from Byramji’s stable ( May be 89/114 ).

VS RATED ASLAM KADER AS BEST:

Among his Indian contemporaries Vasant Shinde picks Aslam Kader as the best. AK had style and grace and just unbeatable.

PROUD TO WIN INDIAN DERBY, INVITATION CUP RACES :

VS feels proud to win Indian derby in 1978 on Manitou under R R Byramji and 1983 on Nelson under C A Kutappa . ( C A Kutappa’s name is mentioned in some media reports, to be rechecked ). He won two Indian Turf Invitation Cup races also under Byramji in 1977 with  Squanderer, and in 1978 with Manitou. He won Indian St leger on Squanderer in 1977, on Capricorn ( trainer B Chenoy ) in 1987,  on Classic  Story in 1990 and on Adler in 1993 .

WON MANY TIMES BANGALURU DERBY AND ST. LEGER:

Vasant Shinde won prestigious Bangaluru derby nine  times — with Everynsky in 1979 and again in 1980, one in summer and the other one  in winter, with Sovereign Crown in 1981, with Camino in 1982, with Caminetto in 1983, with Premium Spirit in Jan 1987, with Divine Light in July 1987,  with Gordon Bleu in 1988 and with Classic Story in 1990. He also won Bangaluru St. leger nine times — on Round Off in 1976, on Reflect in 1978, on Darado in 1981, on Abide in 1982, on Scintillating in 1985, on Premium Spirit in 1987, on Armagnac in 1989, on Classic Story in 1990 and on Astronomic in 1993.

He won many derby races at other racing centres of our country too and won many classic races including 1000 guineas, 2000 guineas,  Fillies and  Colt Trial stakes, Oaks and St leger like big and notable races. I included his most of the winners from RWITC and BTC, which were his first and base preference centres for riding

SQUANDERER RATED AS  A FAVOURITE TOP HORSE:

Vasant Shinde rates Squanderer as the top horse that he ever rode, though Squanderer, tone of one of the all time great Indian horse, ridden many times by M Jagdish also. Squanderer won 18 out of 19  races he ran, and lost only once to Red Satin in Bangaluru Colt’s  Trial Stakes in 1976 when Red Satin broke away from the field just before the bend and won. Squanderer was kept too far and finished third, three lengths and a neck behind the winner and of King of Seers. May be Jagdish was over confident and made the move little late, as reported in media. R R Byramji was convinced that though a battle had been lost, the campaign remained on course. Vasant Shinde rode Squanderer in Indian Turf Invitation Cup and in Indian St. leger in 1977. In his final year, as a five year old, Squanderer won all five races. Two at Mumbai, one at Bangaluru and two at Hyderabad ( The Nizam’s Cup and The Present of India Gold Cup ).

OTHER NOTABLE WINNERS OF VASANT SHINDE:

Some of Vasant Shinde’s other top notable winners includes —  Night Crown, Reflect, Niagara, Self Reliance, Track Lightning, Look of Eagles, Darado, Sovereign Crown, Abide, Artaius, Scintillating, Flights of Fantasy, Loving Spirit, Nine Carat, Treasure Land, Wind Song, Citi Girl, Wild Rumour, Captain Eo, King Rama, Excalibur’s Star, Summer Dust, Adler, Winning Spirit, Ruby Lights, Classic Spirit, Southern Girl, Southern Wind, Nikita, Kir Royale, Maraschino, Stellar Role, Paradis, Delorean, Cointreau, Bianca, Parfait Amour, Armagnac, Wild Passion, Bizzarini, King Air, Wild Dancer, Wild Passion, Cordon Rouge, Caran D’Ache, Davidoff, Delage, Cisitalia, Pininfarina, Stingray, Galiceno, Boodles, Asian Lady, Imposing, Born to Dance, Bay of Biscay, Palace Music, Escapade, Imperial Seal, Sir Dickson and Albertini. ( VS won more than 1800 races and 110 classic races, so you may find  few names of notable winners missing too ).

WON RACES AT HONG KONG :

Vasant Shinde won two races at Hong Kong in 1978 - one “Small Parcel” and another “Crown Jubilee “.

THE DIFFERENCE IN RIDING IS EASILY NOTICEABLE:

Jockeys have to make instant decisions and the better jockey make fewer mistakes. Vasant Shinde use to avail the narrow gaps available between horses and take some risks to cover less distance but not all jockeys would be willing to take that risk. Good jockeys develops relationships with trainer, owner and individual horses too. They knows the strengths and weaknesses of the animal. They do home work and research for the competition. Often watch review videos of other horses and read the daily racing form for updates on their performances that then inform strategy. They know how to keep them calm and composed in tense situation. They read the track and pace of the race very well,  and accordingly position their horses for final assault. A good jockey can win races that poor jockeys lose.

ADOPT CHANGING CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESS:

The winning punter is not the man who holds the proper set of dogmatic beliefs, but the one who can observe and adapt to the ever-changing conditions of the game.  Off course luck is a essential ingredient along with patience and talent. But a winning punter who has the experience and honesty to sense when he is about to lose can save himself a lot of money. If one remains over confident in racing than , he is horribly misdirected if he looks for it at the racetrack.

I still feel,  I might have missed something more about Vasant Shinde, a entire book is not sufficient to write about him. You  all are welcome  and join me to cover the uncovered memories and incidents from your past memories and share the same.

Be happy, don’t panic, be careful....be safe.  Be a warrior we’ll fight together this corona pandemic crisis situation and overcome and win soon. Good luck and God bless you all.

Hello Shrikant,

Are you from Bangalore?
If yes, then no problem in meeting Vasant Shinde. He is there at the race course on every on-course days. You will spot him around the office block. He is friendly and quite approachable.

If you are from some other racing centre then you will have to make do with what is published by the racing blogs.
You can also google search and get to read some of his exploits.

As to wanting him to be interviewed, for that, you need to correspond with indiarace.com and see if they take up your request.

Meanwhile, until then, you will hear some from me since I haven't quite finished recanting of him yet.

Hello folks,

One more correction in the posting made at 02:58 on 01/09/2020.
The 2nd line after the start says -" Before I elaborate on the awesome ride I do NOT need to make...".

Please have it read as - " Before I elaborate on the awesome ride I do need to make...." without the NOT.

Hello folks,

Resending since it appears skewed and difficult to read.

I need to make a couple of corrections.

It is in this para - Note: Chaitanya Chakram could have become the first Indian horse to have scored 4 derby victories  but for the ban imposed by TN Govt. The Nilgiris derby was never run as such ( that year  ).

Please have it read as 5 derby victories  instead of four (4).

Hello folks,

One of the greatest rides of Vasant Shinde happened to be on a losing horse. Before I elaborate on that awesome ride I do not need to make a prior mention of the eventual winner - Chaitanya Chakram. He was simply unstoppable once he had hit form early in his career. He loved to dictate the pace and made the opposition pant to catch up to him, for so dominating was he.
He treated his rivals with scant respect and played catch-me-if-you-can game in every classic or big race that he participated in after having hit form.
His regular partner in all, barring one at Mysore, prior to the epic clash with Shinde-ridden Capricorn in the Indian derby, was Lloyd Marshall.

Now come to the ride mentioned of Shinde, which, though a losing one, was one of the finest exhibitions of saddle-artistry that justifies the tag labelling him as one of India's greats.

I will cut the chase short. As was his wont, Chaitanya Chakram hit the front right from the word 'go' and had them all following him meekly behind. I say meekly because the ones expected to set the pace or even pace up to him for a while, failed to do so.

The pattern was the same till bend and then something happened that this front-running machine wasn't accustomed to. He suddenly had the 'grey' move up to challenge him once they were well into the straight. The grey happened to be Capricorn.

Thereafter, the battle began that went on right till the winning post. Shinde on Capricorn had cut down the lead that Chaitanya Chakram enjoyed till bend and soon was abreast of him. Then on they fought a ding-dong battle, going almost stride-for-stride. Two champions, Chaitanya Chakram and Capricorn, giving their best. A stirring duel was fought with Chaitanya Chakram having his 'neck' in front at the finish.

You may have seen many such great finishes but what separates this from most of them is the fact that Chaitanya Chakram could never be challenged until then. His every victory, from Nilgiris Colts trial stakes till Indian derby, was authoritative. He was The 'Boss' and like the saying goes that the boss is always right, Chaitanya Chakram made them come true. He had treated the opposition with scant respect after the Nilgiris Colts trial stakes victory.

Note: Chaitanya Chakram could have become the first Indian horse to have scored 4 derby victories but for the ban imposed by TN Govt. The Nilgiris derby was never run as such.

Let's get back to the magnificent ride given by Shinde astride Capricorn. The Indian derby was the only instance which saw Chaitanya Chakram getting extended and almost overcome by Shinde-ridden Capricorn.
This statement is being made only in reference to the classics that Chaitanya Chakram annexed, which was, overall, all of nine.

The greatness of the ride was proved in their very next clash which happened to be The Turf Invitation Cup. Chaitanya Chakram had Robin Corner to guide him since Shinde had to ride Premium Spirit.
You know what happened?
Capricorn finished a tame 3rd to Chaitanya Chakram, few lengths adrift.

Prior to the race, Shinde had said, his exact words, in Hindi, since he was poor in English, ' Tang toot jayega' implying that the rest could have their  legs broken in trying to beat him ( Chaitanya Chakram ).
That was Shinde at his affirmative best.

That statement alone was enough for me to dive deep on Chaitanya Chakram in The Invitation cup which recouped my losses made on Capricorn in the Indian derby along with an overflow too.

Time forbids me for going on. I guess, what has been stated about the losing ride of Shinde in the Indian derby, justifies my belief that it was one of his most spectacular rides ever.

Do view the splendid ride by clicking on this link:

We find many interesting articles to read  from shri S.C.Sharmaji on various topics like "Real story of a middle class punter cum horse owner ",  "Profitable and a risky profession",  " Vasant Shinde most naturally gifted and complete jockey",  "Unforgettable memories of Indian racing " etc., etc.  Certainly these articles are invaluable for any inspiring punter.

On the other hand Shri SSPPji has also writing excellent articles focussing  on the other side of the coin which is also equally important for streamlung the erring punters .

But it seems that nowadays SSPPji might have decided to keep off or stay off especially to avoid beating about the bush or talking about a particular subject repeatedly so that he do not want to upset someone in HT.

On behalf of the members in HT,   I appeal to Shri SSPPji to continue his valuable contributions for the welfare of the punters as usual.

@ Kshitij:  Pandu Khade and Vasant Shinde both great riders of their era.  P Khade won first Indian derby in 1950 on Mansoor Beg trained by H R Somnath, second on Balachand in 1957 trained by D N Adenwalla, third in 1961 on Alijah trained by Maj V M Lad and fourth on Mansoor in 1973 trained by S S Shah. He won many classic and big races between 1950-75, but in mid or late 70's he was near retirement and Vasant Shinde started his racing career in 1970's and picked good form in mid and late 70's. VS won his first Indian derby on Manitou in 1978 and second Indian derby on Nelson in 1983 apart from  winning many classic and big races.
There was a reference of a close contest between Wild Blossom and Squanderer may be of  period between 1975-77, where  these two great riders clashed against each other and the race was a long distance one  at Pune. It was reported in media that P Khade displayed his smart riding skills when he rode Wild Blossom trained by M K Jadhav and adopted a runaway tactics whereas Vasant Shinde preferred a waiting race on Squanderer. WB took almost a furlong lead midway through and before bend Shinde has to hurry up Squanderer but when it looked like Squanderer catching up or coming closer, P Khade re-accelerated Wild Blossom and created a longish gap of more than a distance and than Shinde has to go for whip on Squanderer and finally VS managed to beat WIld Blossom on post. Prior to this race no one had ever came close to beat Squanderer. VS often use to compare Squanderer to a Ferrari.
Other than this incident I never came across any clash of these two titans. May be the details are not available or may be my racing career started very late. If some one have more info,  they can share. Thanks.

Hello folks,

It is mighty strange that indianstudbook.com, the keeper of bloodline records of India, does not list The Invitation Turf Cup as an Indian classic.

When one opens their site and upon clicking on Indian classics, only The Indian 1000gn, 2000gn, Oaks, derby and St. Leger winners are displayed.
Indian Turf Invitation Cup finds no mention under the listing of INDIAN CLASSIC WINNERS.

Perhaps they need to be educated on that.

Hello folks,

I fail to understand as to why Late. MAM Ramaswamy was so desperate to lead in an Indian classic winner at Rwitc, Mumbai, when he had achieved the same with Own Opinion.

Perhaps, for him, Indian classics meant the Indian 1000gn, 2000gn, Oaks, Derby and St. Leger. Here we have to factor in that Indian St. Leger was never run at Mumbai permanently since inception.

The clarification can't be reached now since he no more. Hence let it rest at that.

Hello Shrikant,

Vasant Shinde-ridden Splendid Role gave Dr MAM Ramaswamy his FIRST Indian classic success that he had been craving for long in the famed gold and brown belt silks. His long-standing desire was fulfilled after over 3 decades of racing.
You have rightly said of the finish. It was a cluster one involving multiple contestants, where-in the first 6 or 7 runners were seperated from each other by very short margins.

Splendid Role was bred as No Louder x Lady Treego.

Most would be aware of the stallion, No Loder, that stood at Equus stud but Splendid Role was not foaled there.
She was either got-abroad or bred-in-utero. That was done by Poona stud farm ( the famed Poonawallas stud of present).

regds,
Cruise

P.S. Vasant Shinde proved lucky for many by getting them their first major success in classics. More on that in next.

Shinde kept S.Role almost back of the field, before bend he switched her wide & not a good position but fully responded well .Its was thrilling victory with almost 7 horse photo finish .

Next day there was big news in Times Of India ----HE MAY PAST HIS PRIME BUT DONT IGNORE HIM.Shinde drives Spelndid Role to an amazing Victory  .

It's an tragedy for Shinde,  in 1998 when he fallen back  on  knee (horse name Ahu )while giving trackwork . His Last mount was on  horse name JAY JAYDEV .

And they are racing for Kwality filles championship & from draw no-18 STATELY HOME hit the front just leading the field...and its 100mts to go COMING FROM BANGALORE & GONING AWAY IN THE HANDS OF VASANT SHINDE,the race is over in last 100mts.

Hello folks,

One of the best rides of Vasant Shinde and Aslam Khader was seen in the same race i.e. Bangalore summer derby of 1988.
Aslam was piloting Treasure Girl whereas Vasant was given the job on Nine Carat to glitter and gleam.
One showed his cool demeanour at the start whereas the other displayed his powerhouse finish towards close of race. It was Vasant at the start and Aslam slicing through the battling duo of Nine Carat and Treasure Girl to win in last few strides.

It so happened at the start that Nine Carat kind of buckled as the start was given and could have gone down on her knees had Vasant Shinde not taking corrective steps in nick of time. He very calmly gathered Nine Carat after she kind of seemed to have knuckled and got her to her stride without losing much ground. Those who witnessed, including Rashid Byramji, trainer of Nine Carat, that it was Shinde's presence of mind that saved the day for Nine Carat. She capitulated to Treasure Girl in a close finish.

The other brilliant peice of riding was displayed by the then upcoming star, Aslam Khader. With about 300m to go it looked like that Nine Carat and Lucky Shrike would dominate the finish but Aslam goaded Treasure Girl to give her best and she did just that. She responded to his urgings to quicken in a trice to overcome the battling duo of Nine Carat and Lucky Shrike in a 3-horse close finish.

For those unaware, the pair of Treasure Girl and Nine Carat had everyone at their edge of their seat fighting a battle that started just after the bend in the Fillies Trial Stakes run about a little over a month earlier to the derby..
It was a sight to behold with Vasant on Nine Carat and Warren Singh on Treasure Girl giving their best with the former getting the photo-nod in his favour. They went stride-for-stride almost the entire length of the home-stretch. That was among the most memorable duel ever witnessed at Bangalore turf club.

Hello Venkat,

I agree with you that Sandy Barclay was a jockey par-excellence. His silky-smooth rides were a joy to behold. I also agree that for his addiction he could have soared greater heights.

But what I don't agree to is the statement that Sandy rode Everynsky in the Indian derby. It was ridden by Vasant and ran 2nd to Mohawk. Vasant had ridden Everynsky to victory much earlier in the Bangalore derby ( summer ).

Another correction: Linden Flora was foaled in 1974 whereas Mayapan, full brother of Own Opinion, was foaled much later.

Undobtedly one of all time greats. I remember his ride on Manitou in the Indian Derby in 1978. Won by a distance and I think he felt a record was on the cards rode him fully out. Manitou was perhaps amongst the first horse in Indian racing to have touched 2.30 for the derby distance. But there were other jockeys with this sublime skill in his days. One was for sure Sandy Barclay; thougn Sandy had an addiction which constrained him. It is my take because of this, Sandy lost the plot on Everynsky in the 1980 Derby.

One race ius however etched in my memory and that of the Indian St. Leger where Vasant Shinde rode Manitou to the ground. He returned lame and Linden Flora(later Mayappan) won the race by a distance. both Ipi Tombi and Manitou went hammer and tongs from the word go and I never understood why they did this. I still dont.

It is a fact that first of Vasant Shinde's 100-plus Classic winners came in Dr. Ramaswamy's colours astride Half A Crown in December 1974. However, he was a not a retained jockey of Dr. Ramaswamy. The 1974-75 year was the one when Shinde, who was Bombay-based, rode a record 53 winners at Mahalakshmi. As an upcoming star, he did ride at other centres but his base was at Bombay and he was still attached to trainer Aziz Mahmoud who allowed him to accept  outside rides.

In 1975-76 and 1976-77, both Jagdish and Shinde were based at Bombay. Jagdish was retained by Byramji who used Shinde more and more especially in 1976-77. That was the year when Jagdish informed the trainer that he wished to move to Bangalore where his sons were studying.

Byramji did not stand in Jagdish's way. He had a ready made replacement in Shinde. Jagdish moved to Bangalore for 1977-78 and had a retainer from Z. Darashah. He did ride a few winners for Dr. Ramaswamy but there was no formal tie-up with A.B. David's stable. That came in 1978-79 and from then on Jagdish rode for Dr. Ramaswamy till his retirement.

Shinde continued to ride for Byramji with great success. As he grew older and suffered some very serious injuries, he began to slip from his own high standards. Also Dr. Mallya and Mr. Deepak Khaitan, two of Byramji's  biggest owners, had retained Pesi Shroff and Aslam Kader to ride for them and so Shinde's opportunities with Byramji were limited. It was Byramji who told Shinde to seek outside opportunities and that is how he joined Dr. Ramaswamy for a short while in early 1990s.  Like his first, his last four Classic winners came in Dr. Ramaswamy's colours riding Splendid Role.

@ Shrikant N, JP, IZ and B V S Prasad thanks a lot for updating uncovered memories. Also thanks to Rudolph Furtado and Love trevor, hyd.
@ Fido Dido : I never mentioned in my post that P Belose won three Indian derbies. No figures are mentioned in brackets against his name ( pl check ), whereas I mentioned figures in brackets against the names of other jockeys who won multiple number of Indian derbies.

Hello SC Sharma,

I fail to recall of Classic Spirit as having done something special. Perhaps you are regerring to Classic Story who got the better of Pesi-ridden Indian derby winner Desert Warrior after battling it out almost the entire length of the home-stretch. The finish was so close that the commentator had declared to be locked together at the finish but he did mention the eventual winner first i.e. Classic Story and Desert Warrior locked together at close of race.

There are many other notable features about Vasant Shinde which shall be let known soon in my next posting.

Its 200 meters to go and its Capital news (Aslam)from Cape Dance(P.shroff),its Cape Dance to Capital News,50 to go its Cape Dance & Capital News...And here comes Supreme Commander (V.Shinde)...Even Harish unable to finish the commentary. Vasant Shinde won Bangalore Colts Trial stake in just last 5 meters..

A very nice and Complete Article for Such a Legendary Jockey after so many years. A very knowledgeable for new one..Vasant Shide A Rare Class. His riding style,His Stance, his sitting position,is very unique. It's an ideal example for Apprentice. That time people was saying",Shinde feels the breath of a horse while riding..

I saw him in 1994 in Pune, Mallesh on Adler and Vasant Shine on Diablo.Adler won the race but the way Diablo finishes in last furlong was so thrilling.Shinde brought Diablo from no where position to finish second.

VASANT SHINDE UNDISPUTED KING OF THE TURF .

Fido Dido- I also mistook about that. Number of wins is only for the bracket after the jockey and not all before. If you see Pesi has 8 and before we have few names.

Talking about Squanderer, read from News papers that when Jagadish switched to MAM and Shinde to RRB, Squanderer did not allow Shinde to mount and ride. It was allowing only Jagadish and Viswanath (I think) the other stable jockey for work and ride. Shinde stayed with the horse to get it used with him. Slowly he got acquainted and started riding.

Vasant Shinde was with Aziz Mohammad and his talent was identified by Late MAM and offered him classic mounts. Shinde's first classic win was Half A Crown winning the SI Derby. How Sharmaji forgot this ? He got a gift from MAM probably Shinde's first car a fiat with registration no TMQ 1. My two wheeler registered on the same time was TMQ 8. Even a couple of years back I saw this car was lying in Shinde's Bangalore house named ROYAL TOUCH. He rode for MAM and Jagadish who was riding for RRB was swapped, Shinde to RRB and Jagadish to MAM.

When shifting to RRB ,Shinde wanted to shift to Bangalore. He had a hell of a time to secure a house on rent since no body wanted to let out to a jockey    My friend was staying near race course and he had a portion in his house for rent and he had displayed TO LET board. Shinde approached my friend who handed him the key and told him that if you like the place you can take it. Shinde was surprised at the response since my friend never asked anything regarding his profession. Shinde never knew that my friend was a punter. Shinde stayed here I think till he purchased the Nandidurg road Bangalore property.

A very nice article. From all the stats provided about jockeys winning the Indian Derby. I am most certain that P Belose has won only 1 Indian Derby and not 3 as mentioned by you. The Horse was Noble Eagle.

Thanks & Regards

I believe Mr P D Aswani a big yesteryear owner whose horses were trained by Aziz Mahmoud had a major hand in bringing V Shinde from Matheran to Bombay.

Having been a regular attendee of "INDIA DERBY " races since 1980 upto this year 2020 was lucky to see some of the best Indian and Foreign jockey's ride in this race.As also some of the World's best jockey's have ridden on the hallowed turf of Mahalaxmi racecourse which include Jockey Lester.Pigott and among the current active jockey's Frankie.Dettori. Sadly i never saw Vasant.Shinde ride but have been thrilled by the riding of Aslam .Kader, especially his partnership with one of India's best horses "Elusive Pimpernel".Now the multi-crore rupees question is will there be "Indian Derby-2021" after the havoc caused to Indian racing by "COVID -19" pandemic.. Ahoy !
