Upset

By S.k.sagar | 27-Nov-2020

He was looking in the opposite direction - MAN OF WAR - when the starter called out. By the time he turned around and started running, the front runners were a `distance` ahead. Arguably the Greatest Thoroughbred  Race Horse of all times, MAN OF WAR was `Money Back` favorite to win this race, it was considered impossible to beat him. But having lost more than a distance at the start, it was a tall order for him. Nevertheless he ran a stupendous race and covered a lot of ground and finished a close second behind the winner.

The name of the winning horse was `UPSET`

And the word `UPSET` was coined in the dictionary.

The word `Upset` did exist in the dictionary prior to Man of war`s defeat, but it was used in a different sense .. such as ``Upset stomach` But a new meaning was added to the word after Man of War`s defeat by `UPSET`. Without doubt it was the greatest Upset in the history of sports.

I don't know how much will versed some of them are here if the word "upset" came after this incident in the dictionary then how come the owner of the horse named "upset" before? Obviously the word was not Roman.

You mean Man O' war not Man of war. Well he is considered to be the best horse of the generation being ranked higher than secretariat as well. Having won a horse race by an astounding 100 lengths and having won the Preakness and Belmont stakes as well. At that time there was nothing known as a triple crown and the fact that he didn't run the Kentucky derby because his owner Sam Riddle thought it was too much for a 3 year old to run 10 furlongs so he never ran him there but he won the Belmont stakes by 20 lengths and beat triple triple crown winners like Sir Barton. He was an expectional sire as well. Having sired so many greats like War Admiral who was a triple crown winner himself, you would know about him if you've seen the movie seabiscuit. He was also Seabiscuit's grandfather from his sire's line (Hard tack). He is seen in the bloodlines of great horses like American Pharoah and secretariat as well. There are amazing videos of him on YouTube. Do watch!  What an exceptional horse! My favorite undoubtedly
