By Raghavan | 06-Feb-2021Accepting bets is legal if the bookmakers are given license from the turf club concerned.
The book-maker will then be permitted to take bets at the club premises. Online betting is a recent development.
The bookmaker has to collect the prescribed gst & club commission from the punters.
Due to coronavirus threat, many turf clubs have not given license to bookies at present. BUT, there are "private bookies"!
The Mumbai police have arrested four people for accepting bets illegally. A case is registered at Shivaji Park police station under Indian Penal Code sections corresponding to charges of cheating & gambling. The four accused were produced in Court which remanded them to police custody till February 9th.
The four were caught taking bets on Kolkata races (Feb 3).
In a separate case, 31 people were arrested in Pune for taking illegal bets during 2nd week of December.
In another case, the City Crime Branch arrested 3 persons who were taking illegal bets on horse race. The accused were taking illegal bets from a lodge nearer to race course.
Acting on a tip off, the CCB sent a decoy customer to place the bet.
Once the decoy placed the bets, he signalled to the police, who raided the place and caught three persons red handed.
There were frequent raids at BTC during winter season of 2019-20 on bookies (regular & licensed) who were taking bets but were recording much lower figure in their bet sheet. In fact, during winter 2019-20, the licensed bookies were not operating for several race days.
These arrests should be an eye opener to those who are shouting from roof tops that they are doing business with "private bookies" as if it is a status symbol and badge of honour.
