Women Power On Saddle The Aussie Saga Of Gender Equality

By Anilxk | 09-Feb-2021

Friend's,

All over the world heated debates of gender equallity and participation of women in all sector's is going on. When we look at jockeyship Australia is far ahead than any other country in the world.

Austalia licensed women jockeies in 1979 only . Junus Lossin is the first women jockey licensed but limited her rides at country courses.

After her Claire Lindropp dropped into the pic and won many races in metro courses with her sheer start to finish tactics. She was followed by Melbourne cup winning jockey(now playing dual role of jockey and trainer) Michelle Payne came. Anoher jockies like Linda meech and Kathy O hara came to picture in late 90's.

Now they have Super star's like Jamie Kah, Margarett Collet and future star's in Chloe Azzopardi, Laura Lafferty and ever green Stacey Rawlier.

But where Indian racing scenario stand's at....

We got a jockey with equal skills in Silva Storaii after she stationed in India from 1978, Daughter of Ex Jockey Narpat Sigh Rupa (Now trainer along with brother Ravinder) and Hema Bindhu only till the date .....

There is no support or encouragement from clubs ....

Trainer and jockey are totally different. Trainer taking statistical risk

But jockey taking physical & mental risk.

I will tell you a  real story

A good friend of me in 90's

Now a trainer at Mysore, father also trainer with limited mounts

Once mother is a leading owner, brother in law is a classic trainer....

He was booked for a ride for Trainer Pradeep Annaiha , when we met at grocery shop ( near by high grounds) he just tried to avoid me....

I just called him with our casual words( intimates use vulger words) he turned up on me and replied I am helpless..... don't play any of my mounts in next two Bangalore day's.

I relpied him that I am playing with my own calculations and assessment, it is rock solid.

He scored double on both days ....all are favourites....but ranging from 17/10- 28/10

Now enjoying successful trainer life....

Hello folks,

There is only one instance of a lady rider from abroad. That happens to be Ms Lisa Jones. I recall her ride on raging-hot favourite African Sky ( 40/100 ). She tore away from the pack right after the start and led by more than 10l turning for home but the scene underwent a dramatic change thereafter. She was passed by them all in the straight. Many opined poorly of that ride.

Among lady owner cum breeder, I recall of Maharani Gina Narayan of Cooch Behar. Famed Midnight Cowboy.was her best owned horse.
I do recall of a stallion which may been associated with her - Damaston.

Fearless Nadia, well-known cine actress too was associated with racing.

Divyug stud farm was run by a sibling pair of brother and sister.

Charming daughter of jockey-turned trainer Christopher Alford, Melissa, currently plays a vital role in Calcutta racing.

That ones that I could readily recant.

regds,
Cruise

Participation of women in Indian racing is on a small scale. I think you have missed name of  Ayesha Captain who was perhaps India's first lady jockey.

There have been more trainers -- Miss Diane Craig-Jones, Ms. Arti Doctor, Mrs Irene Patel (now Mrs Sunderji), Mrs. Parvati Byramji, Miss Nazak Chenoy are some names that readily come to mind.

Among breeders Youvrani of Alwar, Mrs. Anne Wright, OBE, Mrs. Shillagh Foster, Ms. Divya Chaudhary, Ms. Ameeta Mehra, Mrs. Simone Poonawalla-Pandole are prominent.

I am sure there are others that I could not remember. I am also sure that other readers will make good the omission.
