Kritish Bhagat - Indian Richard Hughes In Make

By Cruise_b'lore | 27-Mar-2021

Hello folks,

I guess most may have witnessed the stylish ride that Kritish gave on Minx today. He was supremely confident and came with a well-times move to win going away at the finish. The way he crouched on the saddle after being assured of victory was very akin to that of what Richard Hughes would do on his mounts. In fact, Kritish reminded me of of the ride that Richard Hughes gave on Jacqueline in the Indian Oaks. Supremely confident and seemed as though that race was replayed by Kritish on Minx.

He certainly has panache and style in plenty. Witnessing a stylish rider after a long time.

Wishing the very best for a glorious future!

Cruise

Karl Umrigar started riding in 1977 and recorded a treble as  5 kgs. apprentice in his first season on 3 April 1977.

       P. Trevor started riding during Mumbai winter season of 2009-10. In his his first season on 14 March 2010, he recorded a treble through ROYAL GESTURE, WESTERN CHALLENGE and GERRAD as 5 kg. apprentice.

Hi Zeddzzz,

To your specific query whether/if any first season allowance rider ( apprentice ) had ridden a hat-trick of wins.

Well, the answer to that is NO.

No allowance rider has ever ridden a hat-trick of wins in their first seasonal appearance in India.

@ all, what's so great about him ?

His positioning of the mounts are well judged, he has the confidence to urge the horse with hands & heels even in close races without mercilessly whipping them. He won a mile, went back to a scurry & back to a mile in a hattrick. So what?

Isn't our stalwart Chanakya much greater, I ask? Why don't you guys give him his due?

Nowadays I try to predict like him.

Race 1) Hold coffee cup on your right hand at 83 degree angle during race run. If it spills a little, favourite will lose by a short head.

Race 2) Go for a bathroom break. If number 3 is favourite , wait for the 3rd slot to get vacant. Then once you stand there, you may be able to wash away all the chances of the favourite & it may lose.

Race 3) Have a stroll around the canteen area & pick up some munchables from 3rd, 7th & 8th stall. The race maybe confined to numbers 3, 7 & 8.

Race 4 - Feeling a little tired, sit on the bench & just say Favourite will lose. Give a pig's shit about whether the favourite is iron Age in a 1000 metre race, a Polar Falcon in a 1200 m or a Set Alight over a mile. Just pray, man pray.

Race 5 - Stand with the sun setting to your backside & welcome the dusk with banging on the favourite.

Race 6 - By now when pretty little seem to have worked, pool money with Raghavan in exacta & tanala tickets & have alast desperate try to see whether enough comes out for your 4 drinks with some munchies. Voila , it works sometimes.

And then, when I am in my dreamy liquory world, who can stop me from funding my US UK visits & ranting about them. Once I am high enough to do that, my evening is made. I am prudent enough to keep money aside for return trip to homeland which will turn soon into fairyland of dreams when I hit my bed.

Till morning, I bid adieu to my loser friends . Tomorrow's another day.

@ Zeddzzz

I knew that Karl Umrigar had ridden eight winners in two consecutive race days as an apprentice but was not sure if it was 3-5, 5-3 or 4-4. Hence had to dig a bit.

3 April 1977

AVENA SATIVA (7/2) - MK Jadhav

HELICON (3/1) - DN Adenwalla

PRINCESS KIRTI (7/2) - Bezan Chenoy

Claimed 5 kgs. allowance on all three.

6 April 1977

LAPIS LAZULI (7/1) - BK Lagad

ALTHEA (5/4) - DN Adenwalla

Claimed 3.5 kgs. allowance on all except LAPIS LAZULI who was handicapped 47.5 kgs while Umrigar's lowest riding weight was 48.5 kgs.

LOVER BOY (7/10) - Uttam Singh

AMONTILLADO (Evens) - BK Lagad

HABARI (Evens) - BK Lagad

@ Zeddzzz

Don't have to dig at all.

Apprentice jockey A. Kumar rode four winners at Pune -- MEKHLA (4/1), NUPUR (9/4), MOSELLE (5/1) and  WILLOW GREEN (11/2) -- on 18 October 1975. First two were for Mr. Sajjan Kumar (trainer Uttam Singh) and the next two for Gwalior (trainer Maj. V.M. Lad). He was Uttam Singh's apprentice. On first three winners he claimed 5 kgs. allowance and 3.5 kgs. on the last winner.

I know of this instance so I am mentioning. I do not know if it is record.

He Iz An  EXCEPTIONAL  TALENT  Which He Proved Yesterday. Its A Real Pleasure Watching Hiz Rides.

If I Am Not Wrong He Created  HISTORY  Yesterday By Winning A Hat Trick. I Think No Indian Apprentice Jockey With 5 Kgs Allowance Did A Hat Trick In His First Season Itself. Cruise  And  ITR  Can Dig Deep And Provide An Answer About This Record.

Wishing Him To Acheive More And More Laurelz.

Let that boy comes up with good wins in future....

Chandrakanth is better than C.Rajendra in apprenticeship  time. After 30th win Dilip singh taken more than two years to find a winning mount. Fierry apprentices Ram patil and R.Rajesh singh are not in scenario after completion  of allowance.  Talented riders T. Atul, B.L.Paswan, GY.Rajesh babu are totally ignored. Thinking ridersvlike P.Sandeep, Suresh, Etc are vanished from scene . And more over the talent of the beginning of 2000 C.Harish is missing.

It is important to develop the talent and character of those young people and surely the responsibilty of racing authority. I never noticed that any kind of motivational classes or personality developmental classes conducted by any of the turf clubs.

The trainers are considering apprentices like street whores available for an attempt.

Dear GOdzilla Sir,

I may not have the experience that you have in Horse racing. But dont know why are dragging a cricketer to Horse racing.

Talking wrong about Virat shows your character and respect you have for Indian Sports.

Never expexted this from a big old guy.

Indian Turf Record

Let us appreciate the lad for good riding to start with as an apprentice. The lad will show more enthusiasm and improve further. It costs us nothing.

You are talking about Virat Kohli. Even his charisma is short lived and he is a flop consistently.

Nothing wrong in appreciating who deserve the most and calling a spade as spade.

Crusie, one day you compliment Angad, another day Bhagat tomkrrow someone else. Whamy worry on these jockeys. How many wins Angad had after you posted last. Bhagat is winning horses from India's top trainer who prepares his horse to win unlike otther trainers.

@ JP

I am replying to you after having checked the records. Records alone don't tell whole story. If there is something more you want, please ask. Also manual checking of records means there can be mistakes and if anyone spots them please mention.

A Waheed rode his first winner on BILLO for trainer M.B. Mangalorkar in Bangalore Summer season of 1977. With his allowance, BILLO carried only 41.5 kgs. In 1978-79, he had his best year winning 28 races during winter and summer seasons. Only odd winner was for S. Moses and he does not appear to have been that trainer's apprentice. He rode a lot of winners for SK Habib Khan.

In 1979-80 and 1980-81 he rode as full jockey for S. Moses. That was probably because Eccleston who had ridden previously for Moses migrated to Chennai. By mid-1980's he was riding only a few winners. Moses had a fairly big string and as stable jockey he was ridng against foreign jockeys all the time but I would not say that trainer had no other option. In two Bangalore winter seasons that he rode for Moses he won 21 races from 164 mounts which is only a fair record.

You are correct when you say that real test of a jockey comes after he has lost his allowance. A very knowledgeable racing man once told me that you should follow an apprentice only till his allowance comes down to 1.5 kg. The wait to see how he shapes up.

There has been some mention that P. Trevor was an apprentice with Pesi Shroff. In 2009-10, Trevor burst on scene with about 30 winners at Mumbai and Pune but only one winner or two was for Shroff. It was after URBB retained him that he began to ride more frequently for Shroff. Real credit for Trevor belongs to URBB.

One century does not mean we have seen next Virat Kohli. Too much praise too early is surest way to make a good apprentice get swollen head.

Thanks ITR. Yes, now I could recollect Evita and Young Tippu. It was the early years of Bangalore winter season when the likes of Swinburne, Roche used to come to Bangalore. Swinburne used to come for trainer R. M.Puttanna and untimely demise of RMP Chandrasekaran took over his stable. Even Swinburne Jr used to come. Those were really glorious days .

Hello folks,

The passage of time dulls one's memory. The horse mentioned as Sinply Stylish could have been named simply superb or something like that. Its a bit vague and foggy. Unable to get the name right i.e. if I am mistaken about it.

Hello JP,

I recall of him having ridden Evita ( Everyday 11 x Marthagunn ) to victory in a mile classic. She was trained by Sidney Moses.

You were right. Moses did patronise and encourage him a lot.

@ all ,

what is so great about him...

I remember there was a old timer jokey called ... Bhagat - an honest but average jockey better than today's inflated clever subservient youngters and oldies who love dough and not RESPECT...

This boy may or may not be connected/related to that Bhagat....

I don't maintain a register for the pedi gree of owners, trainers, jockeys etc. although I do look for the pedigree  info of runners of a race...

Hello JP,

Waheed rode in Bangalore as well in wetern India circuit.
I remember him for his ride on Young Tipu. He outwitted the seasoned rider Jagdish, astride the raging ot favourite Red Cheiftain ( 40/100 ), with a start-to-finish victory. He took advantage of the chunks of weight that he was receiving from Red Chieftain.

I recall one more ride of his on a horse named Simply Stylish, trained by IA Sait. It won at generous odds ( at Mumbai ).

He unfortunately died in an aircrash. The landing wheels of the flight clipped the boundary wall of the airport and crashed ( at Bangalore ).

I am told that Aqeeb Waheed, who rides in Delhi, happens to be his son..

Friends, before you start singing his praises, at least get his name right. If it is a sacrilege to mispell a horse's name, what about a human being's name ?

@ JP

I can't remember off hand. Will check up when I get time.

Yes a good upcoming Jockey. Unfortunately, lot of good jockeys who were in limelight as apprentice have gone nowhere or just as rider boys/track jockeys and riding also ran horses. Allowance jockeys with talent are encouraged and dropped as soon as they become full jockeys and going for so called top jockeys. I remember only Sydney Moses as trainer in Bangalore encouraged his apprentice Jockey in classics also against Roche, Swinburne and other top Indian jockeys. I remember his name is Waheed and I am not sure. ITR can correct me. He was one of the best.

Just take a watch at Kritish Bhagat's ride on Theodora, March 21, 2021 (Race#176), there is so much Richard Hughes in the last 50mtrs....

No surprises... he is with Pesi's camp, Pesi would have spotted his talent way early!!

Way to go champ!!
