When Will Races Restart?

By Raghavan | 20-May-2021

Almost every punter is frustrated because there is no racing at any center in India.  The prospects of races resuming in the near future looks bleak.

I am not astrologer.  I can only guess the most possible or practicable situation.

I remember visiting an off course betting point on 13 March 2020, only to be told that races are cancelled.  No indications to that extent was available on previous day.   Even on the morning of 13/3/2020, there were no signs of races getting cancelled.   It was a big surprise because the number of people affected by the corona was less than 500 as on 13/3/2020 & death toll less than 10.  Was even cursing the Karnataka Government because I felt that the cancellation was an over reaction

Presently, the daily fresh cases of corona is in the range of 3,50,000.  And, the death toll is around 4000.  In these circumstances, racing is the last item to be considered by States like Karnataka, Telengana, Maharashtra etc.  Even liquor sales is allowed only from 6am to 10 am.  Needless to say, revenue generated from liquor sales is too high.  Compare this with the possible revenue to the Government from horse races.  Thanks to half tax bets, the revenue to the State Government can only be classified as pittance.

And, social distancing concept is observed only in breach.  Discipline is completely lacking among race punters.

So, there is not even one thing that can be considered favorable to resume races.  If races are run, some horse owners may be able to earn stake money.  Some jockeys may earn few thousands as riding fees.  Will the Govt be taking decisions based on such petty considerations?

I think it is a biggest miracle if summer/monsoon races are held at BNG, MYS, KOL, PUN & HYD.  The earliest dates that can be thought of is November.  That too, only if corona 2nd wave & 3rd wave completely tamed.  Otherwise all activities may resume & lockdown may be only during night hours.  BUT, HORSE RACING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.

And, how forceful are the turf club stewards in convincing the Government to permitting the horse races.  It is moving heaven & earth to reduce the GST slab.  And the Government is not impressed.  Leave alone reducing the gst slab.  The bunch of stewards may consider themselves extremely lucky if the GST council even cares to talk with them.

Horse lovers are welcome to view races in  other countries till races are permitted in India.  And, I will declare that such scenario where no racing is permitted is the best side effect of coronavirus disease to punters.  Some horsetalk members  may label me as  pessimist.  Absolutely no problem.

To all,

The corona has to be tamed.  Both the 2nd wave & the possible 3rd wave.

The State Governments have to give permission.

There are several punters who feel that races will resume during Aug/Sep.   Perhaps, the declining number of fresh cases might be the reason for their expectation.  My best wishes toi them.  Even I am also interested in betting 20-30 tickets on forecast.

"Let the trains run normal schedule first"!

You may be perfectly correct.  But, if punters have to wait for normal train services,  before races begin, then they may have to wait one full year.

Hussain bhai,

What you say is correct.  The racing if halted will put those persons in grave difficulties.  I am particularly interested about tote clerks.

But, my or your opinion will not matter.  The Government is holding Trump Ace.  And, one thing is certain.  The Government will not take hasty decision.  Races were allowed during November 20 to April 21.  And our punters exhibited their contempt for social distancing in shameful manner.  Believe me, I was terribly worried that BTC will get dubious distinction of hot spot for spread of corona disease.  In fact, I was praying Almighty to spare me from the onslaught of corona disease.

Races conducted with out punters is just a waste of time and no revenue. Mysore race club once tasted it. Online betting not successful as it failed miserably because of different rules from each race culb particularly rwitc.

June month will be the deciding factor, if the cases are going to go down considerably before June end, there may be races from July but it's highly improbable.

We public never follow the govt rules , not wearing mask, no social distancing, no responsibility. First public need to have some basic responsibility and discipline.

@ Raghavan ji

You have missed out few groups who are dependent on racing.

1)There are more than 20 bookies in each centre and each bookie employs around 6-7 person on a daily wage basis. Maths will read  as 7*20=140 people.

2)Race book sellers numbers will be approximately 50 in numbers. They get 2-3 rupees commission for sale of one race book.On an average they sell 50 race book and are able to earn approx Rs 200 per day(that is there bread and butter)

3)There are people attached to newspaper and web journalism as well who are dependent on racing activity.

I wish Racing to resume as soon as economy opens up  for the sake of these groups.

Regards

With the vaccine mess, flgging testing, even with falling fresh cases, there is a continuing real danger. No Government of the day is going to take slightest risk.

Thus, according to me, Fengaluru Summer, Mysuru amd Pine Mpnsoon will be a no show. The earliest we can look forward to eb on an optimistic scale, is the winter season arount November. In the intervening period it is useful to start something new. I am getting to be an expert chef!

Cheers

M B M,

You have asked several questions.  Let me answer some of your questions selectively!

"Racing is bread & butter issue to tote clerks".

Even in normal course, it is only hand to mouth struggle for tote clerks.  At BTC there are many tote clerks, married & with one or two children.  In view of 'no racing' they are totally at the mercy of God.

Right.  But, what can be done about that?  We punters are pounded at the race course and are in no position to help them.  The concerned race club should take care of them by extending some interest free advance.

"wherther corona threat has been nullified in other countries?  How they are running the races?"

Good question.  But, you should compare the mindset, psyche of politicians in India & abroad.  For Indian law makers, race betting is sin.  Supreme court ruling to the contrary notwithstanding.  Barring a minuscule, almost every legislator views race betting with contempt.  To be fair, their thinking is 100% correct.  Just think of number of families who are suffering from poverty because of race betting.  The Government may brush aside all such negative narratives, if by allowing the race betting, it gets decent revenue!  But, thanks to half tax bets, the revenue earned by the Government is less than pittance.  For what good, the Government should allow racing?  Should they be appeasing greedy & corrupt stewards and unscrupulous bookies?

The MRC ran Ooty races with sufficient checks.  Yes.  The BCCI also conducted cricket matches with double caution.  What happened?

Mysore race club conducted live races without spectators.  After running 5 days of racing between Nov 11 2020 to Dec 16 2020, it put on hold further racing because it was suffering loss.  The racing resumed only from Feb 1, 2021.   Only after the turf clubs got permission for running the races with limited spectators.  Only God knows what that "limited" means.  The entry fees were hiked to Rs. 300/- because of "limited" spectators.

So, it is really surprising that MRC conducted racing particularly on Apr 30 & May 1, when all turf clubs (including Ooty & Chennai) were shut.

WE CAN NOT FAULT THE GOVERNMENT FOR HALTING THE RACES.

"Let us hope Corona wave will come down"!  Yes.  We can only hope!

I am also interested to bet.  It is really boring to remain in house as if we are under house arrest.  We want races.   My writings convey different understanding.  What to do?  We should acknowledge reality.

One thing i am curious is how will the owners and trainers manage the burden of maintaining expenditure. Breeders produce baby horses but nobody will be there to buy them

Will Corona spreads through Indian turf clubs only ?

Is punters means racing

Racing means punters bookies only

Think over beyond that

Livelyhood of thousands of people who depend on races to mention tote clerks syeces even race book sellers etc (there is a long list ) has been battered out of their with standingness

When all sporting activities have stopped racing has also stopped

Races will start as soon as other sporting activities are started

How races have been conducted abroad during this pandemic?

Had Corona has been nullified there

They are conducting races along pandemic

Countries having more Corona active cases and also with more deaths due to Corona rather than India ( with population wise when compared ) are conducting races

Why some of the countries have opened their door for tourism with some subjections

There is lot of scope for spreading of Corona in all walks of life

Are turf clubs not following Corona rules

Just see how mrc has conducted Ooty with all covid norms rather than in any other sports

Will not cricket or any sport indeed will start after easing up of corona

Will there be nil sporting activities in India in coming months because of simple scaring of future romoured 3rd 4th 5th...... Waves of corona

Life can not come to standstill to a longer period because we have  to live with Corona

We can not sideline any sport or activity because there are numerous people solely depend on that

Will there be no betting on any sports ( official or unofficial )

Let us hope Corona wave will come down

People feel happy and healthy and races will resume in coming days

Prem,

June month extremely doubtful.  Same thing can be said about July also.

August, there is a small chance.   That is Mysore regular.  And Pune. Let us hope for best.

Skr,

The system is administered or managed by  corrupt and insensitive people.  And I believe every dirty thing that are told about racing management team.

In the name of social distancing, these greedy vultures were demanding entry fees of 150/250 on off course races and whopping 250/500 during live races.  On the derby daty at BNG, the entry fees was 1000/-.

Fortunately, it is the Government that has the final say about allowing or disallowing races.   In spite of fury of coronavirus 2nd wave, at Ooty, the racing was going on as if nothing has happened.  Tote sales were stopped all over the country.  Bookies were absent.  In spite of that racing was not halted.  Races went off smoothly on 30th April & 1st May.  For whose benefit?  Definiotely an appeasement gesture towards illegal bookies!

Compared to the second wave , first wave was only a trailer !.Strangely no one foresaw the quantum of distruction , it has been doing .Worse , it has created more uncertainty with regard to future .

Coming to horse racing , the start of the season will be the last thing in the mind of the authorities concerned. The owners will not be able to survive the losses. My mind goes wth the poor animals , who have to suffer for no fault of theirs.

Whatever happens , I am certain the best days of Indian Horse Racing are over.

I’m very sure racing will never start anymore all over India, even if everyone is vaccinated the government will never permit racing till next year fearing the 3rd wave , we will never know the impact uptill next year or the years to come , the biggest problem is that most citizens do not observe the regulations or rules applied , its all care free life ,  many just stroll around the neighbourhood, like touring without mask , what more the government can do , fall on their knees and beg the public  to adhere to the rules to preventing this pandemic!!!
Also you have some frustrated HT members enquiring about as to when will races srart knowing fully well that India and its people are going through so much of turmoil and grief , Heartless , and no conscience is the right word , please pray for those that have lost their lives in these circumstances and help out in your personal capacity rather than dreaming of racing , go to a hospital see how the people are suffering and breathing heavy to survive , oxygen and vaccinations are deprived and people are dying , at least then everyone will know the true potential of this life threatening virus ,

We are unsure if there will be a 4th wave of something even more life threatening in days to come , the ones surving or living must thank their stars that they are a live ,

Dear friends let's pray for the people and are loved ones , the near and dear ones , and reflect how lucky we are to live another day rather than dreaming of entertainment, all of us love Horse races and are hoping for the best to happen but in these uncertain times it's a time to reflect and contemplate how bad it is at present, my sincere prays and regards for all are HT members to be blessed with good health and to their beloved families , stay safe and stay healthy.
