Belmont Stakes History

By Seshadri Giridhar | 02-Jun-2021

Saturday 5th June the Belmont States, the last leg of the Triple Crown, is scheduled to be held at Belmont Park Race Course at Elmont, New York State. Post time 6.45 pm Eastern Time or 4.15 a.m. on Sunday in India.  While Kentucky Derby is called the Run For The Roses and the Preakness Stakes is called Run For The Black Eyed Susan, Belmont Stakes is called Run For The Carnations because the winning horse is draped with a blanket of white carnations. It is also called the “Test of The Champion” because it is the longest of the three Triple Crown races. The first Belmont Stakes was held in the year 1867 and this year will see its 153rd running since in 1911 and 1912 race was not held due to Hart-Agnew Law which banned gambling. The course is named after August Belmont, who financed in construction in 1866. Secretariat won the race in 1973 by 31 lengths. This year there will no possibility of Triple Crown winner since two different horses, Medina Spirit and Rombauer, have respectively won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Belmont Stakes is run over 2400 metres on dirt track except in 2020 when the distance was cut short to 1800 metres. The race was won by Tiz The Law, 12/10 favourite, in front of empty stands due to covid. The stake money is $ 1.5 million (Rs 11 crores). The runners and post position have been announced.
