By Seshadri Giridhar | 02-Jun-2021It has now been confirmed that even the second sample from Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit has given positive indication for drug betamethasone. Medina Spirit is therefore likely to be disqualified as winner of Kentucky Derby and the title will go to second placed horse Mandaloun along with stake money of US$ 1.8 million (Rs 13 crores). The lab where the second sample was tested was chosen by trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert maintains that the quantum of drug found in sample is materially inconsequential contamination but I doubt if the Kentucky racing authorities will consider it as a mitigating factor and uphold the result without disqualification. After the first drug test failure, Baffert had said that the racing authorities are out to get him. Only once before in the 147 year history of Kentucky Derby has a horse been disqualified for failing drug test. That was Dancer's Image in 1968. Baffert has won Triple Crown twice, with American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018.
