Cazoo Derby 2021 Article By Major Nargolkar

By Sumant Dalmiya | 05-Jun-2021

Another article by the Major and as always a delight to read ... His speciality is in weaving the facts in his own delightful way into a story that always has a person wanting for more right till the very end

Just with to highlight another fact in his PAST THE POST section of his article.

FAMILY AGA KHAN are till date the leading Owners with 10 winners - Aidan O Brien with 8 winners is second and can make it 9 if Bolshoi Ballet wins the Derby this year.

For the Aga Khan's - The Grandfather had 5 winners ...  BLENHEIM - BAHRAM - MAHMOOD - TULYAR & MY LOVE

The grandson - The current Aga Han has also won it 5 times with ... SHERGAR - SHARASTANI - KAHYASI - SINNDAR & HARZAND

Major Nargolkar,

This is further to my earlier post.

The photographs suggest that the final climb may be of around 100 yards.

According to the Epsom Downs Course Guide at At The Races 'Runners have to overcome a pronounced camber and a stiff last furlong to the line'.

According to Timeform 'The five furlong course is fastest in the world down virtually throughout....'

The most elaborate description of the race track is to be found on UKBettingSites which says 'The straight 5f course at Epsom is virtually downhill all the way bar the final 100 yards, making it the fastest of its kind anywhere in the world.'

The dip that Walter Swinburn spoke about could have been a reference to the steep gradient that the runners encounter approaching and rounding the Tattenham corner.

Although not exactly related to this topic, Walter Swinburn's Ashforth interview is highly illuminating and entertaining.

I am very much a member of the club of Major Nargolkar’ s Ardent admirers. I`ve not missed reading any of his recent articles, and today when I was about to write something about his awe inspiring articles, on Horse Talk, I noticed this thread  and so I decided to write something here.

Regarding The Epsom Racetrack, Long time back when I was writing articles in Indiarace`s Guest writers column on various  technical aspects of racing, I remember fixing  - after some study - a Long Term Track Index of 1056 for The Epsom Race Track for the Derby Distance of 2424m. As we all know there is a wide variation in the track characteristics of tracks worldwide. This is attributed to several factors such as ground characteristics (nature of ground, dirt or turf, thickness of the crust, degree of compaction,  etc), Inclination of the track (Track gradients in different reaches of the track), number of sharp turns and undulations, etc. These aspects can be taken into consideration by fixing an appropriate Track Index for each track. This Track Index could be defined as the distance in meters’ travelled by a horse rated 150 on the Time Form scale carrying 120 lbs weight (54.5 kgs) in a one minute period on that track, assuming the track to be at its fastest on the day. It may be noted that a particular racetrack could have different Track Indices for different distances particularly for tracks having different inclinations in different reaches.

For an ideal perfectly fast track this index might be 1090 metres.(Note if the definition corresponds to the average distance covered per minute over the entire distance then this track index `F` for an ideal track may vary from 1090 for a 1000m distance to 1000m for a 2400m distance- the second definition)This track index `F` For any track for any distance category can be determined either by experimental observations or empirical means by statistical calculations with the help of past records. If this information is made available for all tracks, it will be possible for a more accurate comparison of the calibre of racehorses meeting each other for the first time after having raced at different tracks.

Based on 1056 as the Long Term Track Index for Epsom over the Derby Distance, the Time Form Rating of WORKFORCE (fastest timer) as per his Derby Win is worked out as:

TF RATING OF WORKFORCE:
Distance travelled `D`: 1mile 4f + 10 yards =2424m
Time taken: 2min 31.33 secs.
Track Index `F` for Epsom Derby course: 1056m
Adjusted time `T` = 151.33*1056/1090 = 146. 61 secs.
Time T1 (corresponding to a 150 Points TFR for distance 2424m  = 142.2*2424/2400 = 143.83 secs ( Refer my Article on Time Form Rating available in Guest Writer`s column)
Weight carried `W` = 56.75 kgs.
Hence Time form rating = 2.22*56.75 + 30 – 22222(146.61 -143.83)/2424 = 130.50 say 130

Coming back to Major Nargolkar’ s Prowess, there are many reasons why I think he is World`s number one authority on the subject of Pedigrees and Performances of Thoroughbred racehorses worldwide. The foremost being the Wealth of `Information in the Feld` - whether in the hard form or the soft form -  which he has accumulated and stored, extremely well planned and organized manner in which he has stacked the information, so that he can locate and retrieve it in no time, and his enormous capacity to research and analyse the subject and present the story in a platter for the enjoyment of the reader. Just as some scientists find considerable sense in the conceptual hierarchy : INFORMATION > LAWS OF PHYSICS> MATTER in the understanding of Reality, so it is with the hierarchy : INFORMATION > RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS > ARTICLE  in case of Major Nargolkar’ s write-ups.

REGARDS

Major Nargolkar,

I thought the contradiction had occured through a rare oversight. I was not aware that there was contradiction in various sources. Since this aspect has already been researched I am sure the account given in the article must have been found to be the most appropriate.

I am giving below a link to a photograph of the straight and the stands for your perusal.

@ Sumant Dalmiya

It is years since you used to drop in at the Stud Book office in Pune. I used to look forward to your visits. Good to see you still as enthusiastic as ever and may you continue for a long time to come.

@ Vizing, Sinndar

I enjoy racing and I try to share that enjoyment. Both of you appear to enjoy what I write and that is the best compliment.

@  Glasgow Prince

Yes. There is a contradiction. What I have written is from memory of what I have seen in person many years ago. There is a contradiction in written accounts also. The diagram (taken from WORLD ATLAS OF RACING) mentions "... the final 50 yards of climb".  The definitive THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF BRITISH FLAS  RACING speaks of  " ... the rising ground on reaching the final furlong". Peter Churchill's HORSE RACING mentions " ... rises steadily after the dip." I remeber a conversation with Walter Swinburn about Shergar's Derby when he said that horse was fine coming down but that he "really enjoyed the race once out of the dip".

"The dip", from memory and watching videos of several Derbies, comes around the 3f pole. For the sake of authenticity, you can Google "Epsom track topography". I did but it was too technical for me and I wasn't any wiser. Can you throw some light ? I have no problem in being corrected. Authenticity is as important as enjoyment.

Major S Nargolkar is a major "RATNA" of Indian racing . His various articles are exemplary and par excellence , filled with minute details of the horses pedigree , black type & classic winners in its family , special traits of the Sire and family  , last 10 -20 years data of that particular race  and some nostalgic memories about racing . He is a pedigree guru , so his knowlede about pedigree is simply the best . His articles are informative ,very interseting and articulate , hence there is no match as far as racing articles are concerned.

Prior to any classic race in India I eagerly await to read his article and then  come to the conclusion to pick my choice for that race. As I being a pedigree student and my bettings are  mostly based from pedigree point of view ,  his articles enlighten my knowledge of pedigrees . Its alway  a pleasure reading his articles about freshman sires and classic races.

God bless him with good health and long life

Dear Major,

Thanks for a very informative and entertaining article as usual.

There appears to be a contradiction though about the straight at Epsom. The text in the figure says 'The straight is all downhill except for the final 50 yards climb.' This seems to be in contast to the description given in the body of the article under 'The Track' whick says 'Another sharp left handed turn and then we have a little over three furlongs, straight and uphill, to the winning post'. Just thought of drawing your attention for the sake of the authenticity.

Best wishes

The Major's articles are an absolute treat to read. In this era where the standard of the Queen's language is falling, his articles would do an Englishman proud. He goes to great lengths to get valuable information and trivia, and makes an otherwise ordinary topic a very interesting one. Thank you Major, and look forward as always, to all your articles.

There is a factual error in my previous post ... The Aga Khan family with 10 wins are most successful Owners ... Followed by 9 wins of horses in which Mrs Magnier & Mr Tabor had a share ... Aidan O Brien is the leading trainer with 8 wins and Lester Piggott the most successful jockey with 9 wins
