Ist:
1.DR DOOM: He seems to be in the handicapper's grip after scoring twice prior to his last run. Well, it ain't all gloom and doom, as there is still hope to resume winning ways in this mediocre competition.
2.AGOSTINO CARRACCI: He has made more money for his connections with two contrasting performances this season. He recovered the cost after one run and gave his connections an overflow in the next by gulping down the punter's money, in which he was the public's fancy and had no shortage of backers. I think they are still busy counting the dough that they raked in.
3.GHOST: His maiden victory was in a sprint, but his next couple of wins were over the longer 1600-meter distance. He may not be in a position to spook the punters, as he does not have the form to do so.
4.MEZCAL: She dropped the rider and bolted in her previous declared run. She appears to be a keen sort, as per that, and can make this race her own with a start-to-finish bid.
5.D MY HEART: His racing record shows that he scored all four of his wins on the longer 1600-meter distance. Well, I, for one, would never fancy a miler in a sprint race.
6.SHEER FORCE: He is speedy, and there is no denying a no-whip race will certainly favour him. If you are craving a long shot, then go for him. I only wish a better rider had been declared.
7.YAZH: Though he is a genuine speedster who loves the shorter distance races, his poor performance last time makes him a suspect.
Conclusion: I would say MEZCAL has the best chance, followed by speedy SHEER FORCE.
IInd:
1.HASHTAG: He gets demoted to the lower class. His owner is famed for going heavy on his fancied ones and if the odds crash or come down, that should indicate that he is on and has been given the green light.
2.MOUNT RENO: He has made his bread and butter money by picking up a race earlier this season at good odds of seven-to-one. I do not think he will require anymore for this season unless he is greedy for more.
3.LAGERTHA; The Mumbai discard is capable of beating this field. Ignoring her may prove harmful.
4.MONTGOMERY: Sucked the punters dry by failing to deliver thrice in a row before getting kicked out of Pesi's stable. Either his connections were dejected or it could be that he had fulfilled their needs. You know what I am hinting at in the latter part of the previous statement. Well, will he make up for those wrongs now? Well, the answer has to be no, given the calibre of the rider who is declared to ride.
5.MAGNITE: He prefers the longer distance races but can fluke it if he is set a fast pace. That looks assured for him as there are a couple of speedy ones in this race.
6.WHISPERING GRASS : He has placed much more often than he has won. In fact, he won once but placed multiple times. If you are a cautious sort, then he is the kind to go for in place. Having a top rider enforces that belief.
7.SCRIPT: Man, this horse has hit form and won thrice this season. The stage is all set for him to be declared the horse of the season if he wins one more, which is certainly possible given his good form. Trainer Vikas Jaiswal has wisely chosen to go with an apprentice.
8.SHIVALIK SILK: She bled the punters dry by scoring at lucrative odds. I'm sure she will not be cruel enough to repeat it and bleed us again.
9.D SALAMROCKYBHAI: I do not know what makes his owner give his horses such strange names. I am so cheesed off that I would not mind risking leaving him out of my calculations. No heartburn for me, even if he were to win.
10.SWIFT LADY: With great difficulty, she beat her stablemate Jinsoku in her previous run, in which she was the market choice. She has been resting since and now returns with fresh legs after a break of more than a month. I believe she can win again because her winning rider repeats.
11.LIGHTNING CHARLIE: I am of the opinion that he is waiting for the monsoon season to start, as that would enable him to strike lightning and thunder.
12.ISLAND LASS: The 1200-meter race appears right for her as she is bred for speed. The only thing holding me back from taking advantage of her chances is that she has yet to score in ten runs.
13.MAGIC MOMENT: The moment of magic has yet to dawn for her. Well, I feel, she might find it difficult to perform. Maybe she will once she gets demoted.
14.LIGHTNING BLAZE: I am not sure why her master has brought this out-of-form runner from western India to run here. If asked, I would say I do not fancy her chances.
Conclusion: I am going for an each-way bet on MAGNITE with a hedge bet on SCRIPT.
IIIrd:
1.AWESOME ONE: It is intriguing that his connections have shelled out a hefty amount to supplement this runner. The only reason that strikes is that it could be because the 1400-meter races appear ideal and favourable to him.
2.CAPE TANAROS: One look at this runner and it becomes clear that this speedy stablemate of Awesome One will be given the job of setting the pace. The only nagging doubt is why Trevor was chosen for such a task. Is there something more than meets the eye?
3.THE PROTECTOR: He finished second, 2-1/2 lengths ahead of 4th-placed Awesome One in his last run on the longer mile. The seven-furlong distance is his preferred one, and in all probability he will try to go one better now.
4.TIGRIO: The failed favourite gets a chance to recoup the losses that he caused to his connections and his backers last time.
5.DANDI SATYAGRAHA: He is the pending horse this season and looks due for a victory. The only hitch is the distance, as he is known more for his sprinting abilities than his staying abilities.
6.MONFORTINO: He scored at six-to-one odds, and I'm sure his connections would be satisfied.
Conclusion: I am pitching for DANDI SATYAGRAHA.
IVth:
1.ANGEL LIGHT: Her owner picked up a couple of discards and gave them to this trainer, who has yet to open his account this season. I am of the opinion that she can earn a winning bracket and open the account for her stable.
2.RAISINA: She is by Wesern Aristocrat, whose gets love the Calcutta track. All she needs to do is hit form, and then there will be no stopping her. I expect that to happen sooner than later. Well, for all you know, it could happen now.
3.SUMMER AIR:He was given a soft ride last time since the "trier" in that race was his other stablemate Emrys, who eventually finished second. I am quite certain he can win with an honest try.
4.SPORTING TRAINER: He beat a bunch of no-good horses last week, and I am certain he will be sorted out by this competition.
5.ODIN: He has forgotten his gate manners and needs to work on that.
6.RANDOLPH: The 1600-metre race proved a bit too long last time. One could fancy him in this seven-furlong race.
7.DUBAI STAR: I am sure his trainer will have a lot of explaining to do with the racing officials if he wins.
8.ATLANTICA: His pedigree is just right for this seven-furlong race. I wouldn't be surprised if he were to win.
9.FREE SPIRITED: There is something wrong with this runner with a flashy pedigree. I am sure his master will sort out whatever his problems are.
Conclusion: ATLANTICA has got no business to lose. The only perceivable danger is RAISINA, which is by Western Aristocrat, and his offspring flourishes on this track.
Vth:
1.ABNEGATOR: He has been tracking brilliantly. If he can reproduce it in his first run on the grass, then he will surely win.
2..RAMIElL: The beautifully bred runner should have struck by now, but that hasn't happened. Will he turn out to be another dud like Sonata? My feeling is that his master, Bharat Singh, has not yet understood how to get the best out of the offspring of Win Legend, the sire of this runner. Incidentally, Sonata, too, is by Win Legend. If Ramiel cannot win here, then I will not hesitate in declaring him a no-good horse.
3.SUPER STRIDE5: He is out of an aged dam. She was 23 years old when he was thrown. Nevertheless, the class that he inherits can enable him to beat this field hollow. After all, he is the half-brother of Set Alight.
Footnote: Remember her controversial run of Set Alight in the Indian Derby, in which Malesh Narredu wrongly chose to hit the front much before the bend, as that resulted in her running out of steam opposite the grandstand. What a furor that ride created! It matches that of Suraj Narredu's handling of Be Safe in the Invitation Cup.
4.ALETTA: She can take hope from the fact that her half-brother, Ghost, won two of his three victories in 1600-metre distance races. Her sire will come into prominence then, as that will mark him out as a sire capable of imparting speed as well as stamina to his offspring.
Conclusion: If RAMIElL cannot win today, then I will not hesitate to pronounce him a dud.
VIth:
1.BASHARAT:He has become a habitual slow starter of late. If he has sorted that out, then he will play a leading role in this race.
2.SANTANA: I am not sure if he is cut out for the longer 1600-metre races. If he stays, he can wreak havoc.
3.BLUE ORIGIN: Mercifully, his owner has not decided to change his name after assuming ownership. His dam was bred to stay, and the 1600-metre race should be a breeze for him.
4.MULTISTARRER: This is the first run of the Mumbai discard on this track. I am sure he will need this run.
5.MAKHTOOB: I would term the move of his master t replace him with a local rider as a brilliant one since the declared rider knows the local track like the back of his hand. I am pretty confident he will run a worthwhile race.
6.ONLY YOU: She made her new owners proud in her very first race in their silks. Her victory was quite emphatic, and an encore is at her bidding.
Conclusion: ONLY YOU looks good, but she has to watch out for MAKHTOOB.
