Grade Inflation...

By Murari | 22-Jan-2024

No, not the inflation in Secondary School Grade As, or the explosion in Chess Grandmaster Grades since the halcyon days of Bobby Fischer and his contemporaries.

Major Nargolkar's excellent piece on this site of the 18th January, spells out the inflation of Indian "Grade" and so-called "Classic" Races (over 45 of the latter) especially when compared to the British Grades 1,2, 3 and Classics, that can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

(Note the good Major's precise use of apostrophes to distinguish between the debased currency and the real thing).

I have long been banging on about how only the "Indian" Classics count as the real deal, but Major Nagolkar analyses the topic much more precisely, backing his write-up with solid facts and figures. I for one, came away learning from it, not least the pyramidal ratio between the different Grade classifications in Britain.

Nice one, Major... a rethink of regional "Classics" and "Grade" naming is in order. When one reads that XYZ Indian Trainer or Jockey has won a zillion "Classics" or "Graded" races, it has absolutely no meaning. Time for a spot of retrospective "Grade" demonetisation, methinks.
