By Gt | 08-Feb-2024

Dear Experts.

Greeting to every one!!!

Request you'll to share details on how the weight of an horse is essential to preform better or win. Most of the time horses perform well when they are in a minus weight state but in some case it's the other way around, are there any prescribed weight that's required for a distance it runs or its how the horse was prepared for the event and weight doesn't matter. Moreover what according to you'll is acceptable weight + or - that can be considered for a selection. Further more is 500kg above a negative choise of an horse to win.

Regards

GT

Hi friends

The relation between horse weight and it's performance is complex and depends on various factors like

breed

Age

Diet

Activity

Health

Discipline.

The optimum weight is derived by trainer after assessment. A horses wt affect its stamina, agility and speed so it is so important to monitor it regularly. Carring wt had no impact on horses with class and stamina.

PERFECT WEIGHT IS BETWEEN 440kgs - 470kgs...

BELOW 400kgs NOT GOOD, EXCEPT FEW HORSES LIKE JULIETTE, KING'S RANSOM AND SUCCESS, DON'T KNOW HOW THEY ARE PERFORMING SO GOOD...

BELOW 400kgs CAN CONSIDER IN DELHI BECAUSE THEY RUN SHORT DISTANCES AND IN MYSORE, CHENNAI THAT TOO TILL 1400mts AND KOLKATA, HYDERABAD RARE CASES...

ABOVE 500 kgs FEW HORSES EXAMPLE OLD IS GOLD 'SIR CECIL'...

SO IN ALL CENTRES AND FOR ALL DISTANCES 440kgs - 470kgs IS PER WEIGHT...

Hi all..It's a nice topic to discuss with lots of factors to consider regarding the weight of a horse, I'm sure many experts will have their opinions..i personally in my early days felt that the horse with heavy weight say around or more than 480kgs will be a better sprinter than the horse who lighter framed say 430 or less  just like we humans ..n same for long distance races horses weighing between 430 n 470 t0 be better stayers but along the way i noticed n many occasions that even the 470 plus horse wins their share...n many more things can b talked about on this topic...regarding horse which looses about 10 to 15kgs after a hard run n running in a short span say in a week or 10 days rarely runs the same race...again so much can be talked on this...will try n share more on this very important topic soon...Experts please share your valuable insights on this subject...

I will share with you the learning and understanding that I have about physical weight of horses.

Basically weight depends on body frame of a horse and can vary from horse to horse. There is nothing called ideal weight of a horse as such. Neither a performance is based on the physical weight of the horse. You have horses like Quasar, Be Safe and Northern Lights which are heavy around 500+ but have been champion in their own rights. You also have horses weighing just around 400 like Juliette and Jacqueline who also have been champion.

What matters is weight difference in horse after it's last run. Some horses have a tendency to stop eating properly for few days after run. Fillies have tendency to stop feeding well after their periods. In such situations horses loose weight.

Now how do we understand if the horse is feeding well or not?

Generally after every run horse looses around 6/10 kgs in next 2/3 days. However they gain around 1.5 kg a bit more or less if eating well every day. After a good workout depending on distance of trackwork it looses around 2/4 kgs.

Now if a horse had a run around 20 days back and has couple of workouts a week after the work. And the horse does weigh +/- 10 kgs compared to it's earlier run, you may consider it to be feeding well.

Just gave you an example actually it's a very vast subject to explain in detail on this forum.

Always the horse run with higher weight far better than the horse carried lower weight. In the past Young Cavelier with top weight 67 Kg beats super mare Sea Shells.

ANY HORSE WEIGHT BELOW 390 SHOULD BE AVOIDED. ANY HORSE WEIGHT MINUS 12KG AND ABOVE ALSO SHOULD BE AVOIDED.

PLUS WEIGHT NO IDEA.
