Why Doesn't India Has Jump (national Hunt) Racing?

By Rajdeep | 09-Mar-2024

Okay let me put it this way, I am excited. Excited bcoz the greatest racing festival in the planet green earth starts in 4 days time. I am obviously talking about Cheltenham Festival which everyone is talking about.

However, I am here to ask this bigger question. I am a horse racing enthusiast of Indian origin but a British born lad. We have both -  Flat racing (in summer) and jump racing (in winter) here in UK. However there is a saying, UK Flat racing is the most dreaded words ever spoken as no one likes flat racing and they do a countdown to November when jumps return.

People here connect to the jump racing more due to the excitement it brings and due to the longetivity of the horses where they appear year after year and a connection been made where as Flat racing is all about Stallion making business. Lets put it this way, flat racing is like IPL cricket where as Jump racing is a classic Test series.

Cheltenham festival. which starts coming tuesday is the 2nd biggest sporting event in Britain after Premier league football. There are preview nights going on every day where famous tipsters giving their verdicts and predictions. People talk about these 4 days of March throughout the year. No Derby. Gunieas, Arc's or Ledger can hold a candle to Cheltenham.

So my question is, why dosen't Indian racing adopt jump racing? Is it the grounds that is the hindrance or there are other factors? I hope India get jump racing as not only it will promote the sports more but it will bring more money to Indian horse racing.

There are two types of obstacle used in Jump racing – ‘Hurdles’ and ‘Steeple Chase’ Fences. Hurdles are smaller and are intended for less experienced jumpers, whilst Chase Fences are bigger. Most horses progress from Hurdles to Chases as they age and gain experience.

The good thing about jump racing and why people connects to them well so is because -

1. Same horses runs season after season and fans build a connection. Since most jump horses are geildings, they race until they grow old. Unlike flat where a good horse gets max 1 or 2 season max.

2. The races are excisting to watch, as the horses should not only be swift but also a smart jumper. Check this video to know how exiciting it is - Kauto Star vs Denman: 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup (youtube.com)

3. In race betting on horses are easier. Since minimum distance of a jump race is 2 miles (3200m), the duration of a race is longer. Punters has enough time in the middle of the race to gauge how it is going and place their bets accordingly.

India has many cold hilly areas like North East or places like Ooty etc. where  these kind of races can be organized. Even in monsoon season when the grounds are soft, we can have jump racing in venues like Bangalore

Guys

In small towns in India, where lot of space is available, these Races can be organized in winter. Betting - intervenue can also be organized in big cities all over India.

I hope everyone feel this suggestion good for long distance hurdle races, where 7 year old and above can participate and extend their career.

In India why not breed new Marwari throughbred horses. Sire should be High quality Marwari horses and they should cover pure speedy mare if not in India or any other countries. India should start new pedegree record keeping. I know to begin with timing will be poor in all distances. I know Marwari horses have good strenght but lack stamina.

Rajdeep, what a topic about jump racing?

1) Indian horses don't know jumping. Haha

2) we need trainers to train them.

3) Also need jockeys to ride as well.

4) We need acres of green land.

4) I agree with Dharam and liked Kunal's comment.

5) Prakash Singhania, good information, agree with you. This is a big industry, but unfortunately Indian Govt priorities is something else.

Rajdeep you need to wait.....

@ Mr.Rajdeep I agree that something new shall be introduce in our horse racing industry but i agree more with Mr.prakash Singhania when he describes that how fever horse racing Centres we have in our country in compare to other countries ,as we have just 9 Centres I also feel authorities shall now think how to spread this business in more cities.It will be great if this dream turns to reality.

"FLAT RACING" in India is struggling "FINANCIALLY" to survive as the only legalized  "GAMBLING/SPECULATION" sport due to the unbelievable official taxation on the sport by the Government.Until taxation on horse racing in India is reduced the sport will always be on monetary life support through benovelent billionaire racehorse owners  with dwindling racecourse punter attendances  although the population of our country has increased over the decades .How can one think of introducing "Steeplechase  horse racing" in India when the original format of "Flat Racing" itself is in financial turmoil.

It's good that jump racing is not there in India infact it should be banned across the world's, 100s of horses die each year because of accident & injuries, extremely painful death they go through

In Many countries horse racing is promoted to a great extent also they do a live telecast of horse racing on various channels, family and friends can watch horse racing from home in pubs and in racecourse as well.

Just like cricket when you enjoy a good game you wish or plan to watch live in the cricket stadium. People do the same for horse racing many countries.

After the invitation Cup I did open a topic thanking Calcutta race club for live racing on YouTube for free viewing and wanted feedback from punters if they thought the same. Was hoping other race centers follow Calcutta and start free live stream.

Also There is a lot of other factors to be considered for dream to turn into reality.  I dont see hurdle / jump racing in India and I don't think it will happen in India  in many decades .

This is just what I think.

Rajdeep, Your points are very valid. But my view is the opposite. I can't wait for the Jumps season (and the accompanying cold, wet weather) to get over as quickly as possible, and the Flat to start!

Jumps enthusiasts are the real lovers of Horseracing, very likely tied in with the ancient British countryside tradition of fox and deer hunting. The sort of people who follow it in the UK are rural countryside people in Ireland and Britain. "Point to Point" Races are slightly less formal but very similar and horses often migrate from this to National Hunt.

Flat racing enthusiasts are looked down by these people as "fair weather" friends, who are in it as much for the social calendar as the love of the horse. I freely admit this applies to me.

As to why Jumps is possibly not a sport in India is it requires very wet, deep ground to lessen the risk of injury to the Racehorse. And if you watch a two and a half or three mile Jumps Race, it leaves one drained (apart from the tension at each fence as to whether the horses will take a tumble or not). It requires incredible stamina from both horse and jockey. I see them staggering home absolutely exhausted.

I am not sure if the breeding in India supports this kind of horse and jockey or the betting interest. I did see an old clip of horses jumping over fences at the BTC when the British were in charge.

Mr. Rajdeep, Read your article. Very interesting subject you took but what I feel is that it's wrong in comparing with countries where racing is conducted almost entire year.  For example I would share ( Got from net)  the details of racing centres in various countries.

Australia =360 Centres

France =250 Centtes

Finland=25 Centres

Germany =50 Centres

Great Britain =65 Centres

United States =100 Centres

India = 9 Centres

What I feel before we introduce  new concept of racing our authorities shall open more racing centres so that this industry can flourish entire year.

 Their are many centre which can have new centre. For example RCTC can plan in cities like Durgapur, Darjeeling than HRC can plan in cities like Vijaywada and Vishakapatnam and Delhi club can plan in cities like Lucknow or any city in Punjab. See if we get 4-5 more centres than during summer season these centres can attract crowd n give jobs to employee n many.

I feel this is now need of hour also if authorities really want to grow and save this industry they shall give options for playing this sport entire year.

I don't know how many will agree with me but it will be very interesting for me to know that am I only who thinks in such way or their are many who feel same way.
