The trainers had no other option except to declare the available jockeys. The myth of top jockeys can only deliver is busted. Most of the trainers and owners think that only big jockeys are needed for big races as though these big jockeys were born as big jockeys. Unless you trust the upcoming jockeys and encourage them you cannot develop quality jockeys. If the so called big jockeys were never given the break at the right time they will be still loitering like many. 

One big jockey now was engaged by a big RWITC owner as stable jockey. But, the trainer kept neglecting him and was encouraging another jockey. The trainers was ckever enough to lock this jockey in big races by engaging him on the same owners horse from another stable which was only a also ran categery. 

Jockeys are only like add ons the main being the horse. If the horse is good enough and the trainer gives spot on instructions the jockey can deliver. 

I have seen in Bangalore trainer Sydney Moses used to engage his young Indian jockey in classics against Roche and Swinburn. He rode such a race that he lost a classic by a short head which is bad luck and nothing superior in the winning jockey. Trainer Sam Hill had so many jockeys in his stable and his horses used to win under any one.

Present day big jockeys are more a bookies choice rather than the connections.
